Is a range of 81.8-86.1 over 45 minutes an okay temperature cylce?

My snake arrives tomorrow and I just want to make sure that my temperature ranges and cycles are okay.

Currently the tank has just a thin layer of aspen bedding on the warm side and a couple little cardboard hides (temporary until I finish his big hide) and I am using the Ultratherm heat mat with a Hydrofarm MTPRCTC thermostat set at 84. My house is set at 77/78.

While there is some variation, it seems as though the temperature varies from the minimum of 81.8 to a maximum of 86.1 over the course of 45 minutes.

To me, that seems like a large temperature range for such a short period of time, is it?

For an example data set:
Thermostat set for 84, house set at 77
7:15 AM 81.8 thermostat turns mat on
7:21 AM 84.2 thermostat turns mat off
7:23 AM 85.6
7:24 AM 85.8
7:25 AM 86
7:26 AM 86
7:27 AM 86.1
7:28 AM 86
7:33 AM 85.2
7:40 AM 83.6
~7:50 AM 81.8 thermostat turns mat on

Oh, and I have the termostat sensor directly against the glass (inside the tank) under a thin layer of bedding.

Speaking of, soon I need to find a way to tape down the cord to the tank so it doesn't move when he is in there. What do you guys use?

If you are going to use tape, make sure it's painter's tape!! Tape can be very harmful to snakes, as it can get stuck on their skin... and damage them very much :( others have used hot glue, silicon (but left to dry for a few days), etc.
I personally use painter's tape, although some may suggest against that.

I thik that temperature variant is normal :) that's your thermostat just turning on and off to adjust, no worries there. Mine goes from 81-87, set at 85F, so there ya go.

That seems like a very normal cycle demonstrating the temperature fluctuation of an on/off type thermostat. Decent range. I would leave it as-is.

The warm side should be about 85, the cool side about 75. The snake will decide where he is most comfortable.

Don't use tape, it can stick to your snake and can harm them trying to take it off. Use a hot glue gun to stick the sensor to the bottom of the viv.
