Temperatures...

CornNoobie

No longer a Noobie!
Hi All,

Right, Ive FINALLY, taken delivery of my new digital thermometer with probe and thermostat, after weeks of waiting for delivery after problems with the ones I got from a local pet shop.
I have just tested the temperatures at the following points:
Warm End - Under Substrate - 104f
Warm End Top of Substrate - 83.3f
Cool End - Top of Substrate - 68f

Obviously these temperatures are not good enough, and thanks to my new thermostat the warm end will be reduced to a steady 85f. Although the cool end is far too cold, especially if I reduce the heat input, it may well drop further. Its only a small starter tank, about 18 inches long, and the heat mat is about a third of the size of the tank. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
I am aware I need around 85 warm end and 75 cool end. Im also worried that the difference between the substrate (less than an inch of aspen) is too big (20f difference), and when I reduce the heat of the mat, the top of the substrate in the warm end may be too cool.

The key is to offer a safe, warm (not hot) place, under the substrate if necessary, that your snake can use to properly digest their food.

Do worry about the top of the substrate being too cool…if the snake needs more warmth, they will burrow to find it. With that said, you don't want your warm side substrate to be cold, but you'll find a happy medium through experimentation.

Personally I run my UTH at 88 degrees “on the glass”.

Regards,
Steve

I live in a fairly cool climate (southern Wisconsin) for most of the year, though the summers can and do get hot and humid. In addition to that, I keep Roxanne on the cooler lower level of my house.

So what I have done to keep the “cool” side at around 75 degrees is to employ the use of a 100W ceramic heat emitter. I cannot stress enough the need to hook it up to either a rheostat or thermostat along with a “cool” side digital thermometer temperature probe.

Steve

In sunny old england the cool end being too hot shouldnt be a problem for me. Although at a current temp of 68f its too low. I suppose I will have to do a bit of playing around and see how it goes.

This is my setup:

- 1 Exo-Terra 16W Desert Heat UTH
- 1 Exo-Terra 100W Ceramic Heat Emitter
- 1 Spyder Robotics Herpstat II Digitial Thermostat (overkill…yes, but an awesome thermostat)
- 2 digital thermometers with temperature probes.

My Herpstat can control 2 different devices so…

I have my UTH plugged into one outlet and run the Herpstat probe (probe #1) along with a thermometer probe to an area over the UTH, under the substrate and on the glass.

I have my CHE plugged into the other outlet and run the Herpstat probe (probe #2) along with a thermometer probe to the corner of my cool side right at the substrate level.

I know using a Herpstat II thermostat is a bit overkill, but I lost my first snake and vowed to offer my second the absolute best husbandry I could.

I hope this clarifies my setup, but if it doesn’t, please let me know.

Regards,
Steve

It shouldn't drop much below 68f cool side unless your room is REALLY cold. Is there any way to raise the ambient room temp a few degrees?

I use one heating device for the warm sides, and cool sides are just room temp. In the summer there is no problem as the snake room does not have an AC unit and hence is usually around 77-80f with the AC in the next room In the cooler months, I don't keep the heat very high so it may drop to 68f, though I'll turn up the heat so it doesn't get below 68f. As long as you still have the 85f warm side I don't think it is an issue, the snake will just tend to stay towards the warmer side.

And as for the aspen, just use a thinner layer over the UTH.

What about using a low wattage heat lamp on the cooler side of the tank? maybe like an infared heat lamp or something? I know they sell the "black light" heat lamps for not to much.
