Temporary Housing?

Due to my husband being laid off we are going to be couch surfing for awhile. We've been given the ok to keep Yuki (our snow corn) in my in-laws basement, however they don't have room for our current set up (55g & stand).. We had planned to use a 29g we had laying around but my husband shattered it a few day ago :(

The only other tank we have is a 5.5g do you think that would be ok for a temporary set up? Like 1 maybe 2 months? If not we might be able to swing for a used 10 gallon but it's hit or miss if we find one.

If the 5.5g will work any ideas on the best way to set it up?

Thank You!

How big is the snake?

If you're pushed and you need something bigger but cheap, you could switch to a plastic tub with air holes drilled in it. Making it escape-proof can be a pain but if you can find the make called "Really Useful Boxes", they seem to have escape-proof lids.

it's still pretty small, less then 2ft. Also I have no way to drill holes lol we thought about that option but it's a no go at the moment.

Those RUB lids aren't escape proof I think, they look similar to tubs I can buy locally and the lid bends a bit in the middle. Nothing that some duct tape to secure it can't fix, though.

Ikea has clear tubs up to 35g, too, so I guess most tub-selling stores should carry up to 30-40q sizes. Or, it wouldn't be impossible to put plastic windows on any old cabinet you might find.

Could you ask the in-laws to drill some holes to a tub? Or you can just take a red-hot nail and poke it through the tub wall to make a hole - do that outside of the house, though :)

Just take some sharp scizzors and push holes into a plastic tub. That's how I put holes in mine... just do it from the inside to out, so the sharp edges can't get your snake.

I guess that works, too, laughs. I've cracked a couple of plastic tubs and lids by pushing too hard though them, though, so I'd recommend a drill or a hot nail if available and scissors as a last resort :)

TELL YOUR FRIENDS TO GO THEMSELVES... YOUR STUCK WHAT YOU SUPPOSED TO DO.... PUT IN THEIR BED TONIGHT.. THEY WII LEAVE AND PROB. SOLVED.

I've found that taking a lighter (grill lighter, cigarette lighter, any kind of lighter) and holding it to the point of a screwdriver (phillips/flathead/hex/whatever) for approximately 20-30 seconds and then pushing it through the plastic is a decent way to punch holes into tubs. It may take a while, but it's worth it to have safe holes without sharp edges, especially if you don't have a soldering iron or wood burner.

I'm sorry but I fail to see how this is helpful at all... We are loosing our place do to my husband being laid off... We found FAMILY that will take our snake in but do to the fact that they live in a duplex the set up we currently have for our snake is too big for the space available..

As of right now we aren't able to go the tub route as my in-laws would be uncomfortable with it. Either we have to make this 5g work, or we MIGHT have found a 20g we're gonna try and get. *crosses fingers*

Just ignore that troll. He's already been banned.

If there's any local members in your area, I'm sure that one would be more than happy to help you out with a spare tank or something of that nature.

Oh! That's a really great idea. I will have to try that.

or poke holes with a $3.00 soldering iron from Harbor Freight / Dollar Store (not the same one in a different package for $27.- at Sears)

Just do it in a well ventilated space.
Make sure you have locking lid clamps on the plastic viv.

Make holes about 2 inches up from the bottom on one side
and on the other side put the holes along the top edge
this allows the magic of Convection to draw air through the container.
I find that 2 rows of holes on the lower side and 3 on the high side allows the air to move through more efficiently then having the same number of holes on both sides. Though you can't really see the 3 holes at the top from the photo...but I assure you, they are there. ;)

If you cant find locking lids I've heard that large binder clips work as long as you're sure you've clipped both the bottom and top.

Dave what are the dimensions of those boxes?

Soldering irons are THE WAY TO GO!!! IMO makes the best-looking holes in the quickest and easiest way possible.

Walmart (AKA Herpers Central) also sells them cheap, I think about $6-8 last one I bought. And they sell locking Sterlite or Rubbermaids. A 28qt for a 2ft corn would be plenty for temporary housing.

Might want to make sure there's NO fragrance of moth balls, pot pooparee, lysol, cedar, air fresheners, etc in the basement, as most of these volatile essential iols are known to cause respiratory damage.death to snakes...

They're (Sterilite, by rubbermaid) about 8 X 15 X 7 tall. Target has the best prices on them here; Walmart is always more expensive and doesn't have as-securely-locking lid kinds. Test the lid before you buy, make sure its not flooppy on the sides, or else put some big coffee table books on top to be extra sure nobody is going to get out and go on an adventure

Update:
Well we were able to get a 20g for $15... And the in-laws decided they want to keep her in the living room now instead of their basement.

Bad news now is we finally found a good apartment that is exactly what we were looking for, and my husband has interviews in this town.. It's the only decently priced apartment, and they don't allow snakes (exotics), or fish without really expensive insurance... So I might have to give up all my pets anyway... Ugh FML :(

I would question that a corn snake is considered an exotic. I would think that exotic snakes would be boas, anacondas, pythons etc.
