The dreaded poo question…

ssmith_1187

In the land of Cheeeeeese
You know there really isn’t an easy or gentle way to ask this question…soooo…how often does your snake poo?

I have had Roxanne since February, and with the exception of 1 regurge, which we are past, all things seem to be normal. She turned 1 year old on May 15th, currently weighs 34.33 grams, is feeding voraciously every 5 days on cut double pinkies and has shed for me twice. She is very active every night with the exception of when she is in blue, so by all accounts she seems to be a healthy, happy corn snake.

The one “problem” I have is her poo…or lack thereof. When I feed her every 5 days and while she is in her feeding container, I tear apart her enclosure looking for fecal matter. I might find a very small amount every now and again, but nothing of any substance. 3 weeks ago, she did poo for me and it was A LOT (grayish in color, about the size of small rodent feed with plenty of urates), but other than that one time, it’s really been hit or miss.

Any ideas? Should I bring in her next fecal matter for a parasite check?

Regards,
Steve

I think young snakes poo in the substrate, and it is very hard to find. Once your snake reaches the 50-70g mark, though, it becomes easier! I wouldn't obsess about it.

(But you should see me going around smelling everyone's vivs to see if they regurged two days after feeding!!)

Hi Steve,

yes...poo is an issue from time to time so we shall discuss it:)

First of all it never hurts if your concerned to have fecal tests done to ensure your animal is of good health. the $40 alone would be worth your peace of mind probably. I must say though that while feeding on pinkies there is simply not much fecal matter that passes through them. I would suggest changing the substrate to white paper towels so you can see more clearly exactly what is coming out and dont have to search for it. The tiniest poo can be seen if on papertowels.

Those are my thoughts...

Thanks as always Nanci!!!

I feel she has eaten quite a bit of mice so far...and was just surprised by the lack of fecal matter.

Regards,
Steve

Dawn must be right- little waste from pinks. There aren't any bones or hair.

Thanks as well Dawn!!!

I think I will bring in her next stool for a parasite check, if for no other reason than for peace of mind.

Steve
