I'm going to buy a corn snake the following week, I read that you need a 20 gallon aquarium, but what happens if I use a 4 gallon aquarium?

That would be ok for a temporary tank for a hatchling. If the snake is more than 3-4 months old, that would be too small. The smallest tank I would buy is a 10 gallon. That will be good for the first year of a corn snake's life.

Oh ok... so I better buy a new one... how much can they grow?

Depends on how often they're fed and genetics. I would say that "normal" would be 2-3' and ~150-250g for the first year. There are some that will get bigger, and some that won't grow as fast. But I would start with a 10g for the first year then move up to a 20g for the rest of its life. A 20 is probably too big for a hatchling.

By the way, you mean a 20 gallon long, right? I regular 20 gallon is missing in floor space, so make sure it's 20L.

That's correct. Corns can grow to be anywhere from about 3.5ft to 5ft on average. There are a lot of factors involved, so it's a hard estimate. You'll need to upgrade your equipment (such as hides, waterbowls, separate feeding bins, etc.) as it grows. Good luck with your new pet!
