The smell of pine

Cindy

Cornographer
I have had a two tier custom made vivarium built from pine with glass doors, I have sealed all the interior wood with matt varnish and left the doors open to air out for around one month. There is still a slight smell of pine, do you think my guys will be OK in this. My eldest snake is about 9 years and youngest about 3 years, just how toxic do you reckon pine smell is? :shrugs:

Should Be Fine

I have built many reptile vivs from pine wood and seen even more with never a problem. The smell is not the issue with pine causing a problem it is the oils from the pine being absorbed through the skin that makes pine bedding a no no and toxic to herps.

Move your new friend into his new home :wavey: and all should be fine.

Not sure of the health issue. I imagine that you might be able to perhaps line the inside of the viv with tile board or contac paper and that might contain the odors on the inside anyways. But I'm not 100%; hopefully someone with a more definitive answer will chime in.

Since you sealed it, it should be fine... Like the other poster said, it's the oils not the smell that is harmful.

they're aromatic oils and as long as you have enough ventilation it should be fine ( I got this info from Kathy Love)

That said sealing any wood is a good idea if for no other reason that if left poorous it has the potential to harbor bactiera, virus and other nasties.

A clean viv is a happy viv :wavey:
