Thermometer probe location?

Another noobie dumb question. Is there a preference for where to place the probe on my digital thermometer? I have a half-log hiding location for my corn that is located where my UTH pad is location. I'm monitoring the temp, but was curious where I should place the probe...buried? on the side so id does not get in the way? Not sure if it even will bother the snake?? Help the noobie! Thanks.
 
well really you should place it on the wall of the side of the tank that faces you put one to the right one to the left. Put if fairly low so you can get accurate reading of the uth pad
 
Put the probe under the substrate directly over the heater. That should be the highest temp in your snake's viv.
 
I have two thermostats w/probes and I keep one directly in the hide over the UTH somewhat buried in the substrate (until it's dug back up) so I know what the warmest temp is and the other is in a hide on the cool side. The more the merrier so you know exactly what's going on temp wise w/your snake. Plus, if one thermostat goes bad on you, the other may serve as a back-up.
 
Thanks to all. I'm getting an 89to 95 degree reading sitting right on top of the substrate...2.5 inches thick. Is that too hot?
 
As Alan said, the probe from the thermometer and the thermostat should be on top of the heat mat, under the substrate, under the warm hide, as that will be the hottest place your corn can get to.

If you place it on the wall of the tank, you are only reading the ambient air temp, which is usually lower than the heat mat, unless you're having a hot spell.

The ideal temp for the warm side is 80 to 85*F :)
 
Sorry to butt in. The temperature on the warm side should be mid-high 80s (not low 80s).

It should be mid-high 70s on the cool side - easy to remember.

alan was right about the probe, it needs to go under the substrate in the hottest place. So at the moment, your temps at 89-95 are a little too hot.
 
I use sticky tac to fasten my probes to the glass on the bottom of the viv. It works well keeping it in place, and gets a very consistent reading considering there is no movement.
