Thermometer probe question

I just bought a digital thermometer with a probe to monitor the UTH. I use reptile carpeting only (no substrate).. so with regards to the probe, Do i just have the probe touching the carpet at its tip? For the past few hours, the reading is around 83F, which is considerably warmer than the room temp, so I'm thinking I have it positioned correctly. Am I doing it right?

Thanks in advance!

It sounds like you are doing it right. As long as the probe is located directly above the heat mat everything should be ok. :) Goodluck with your new snake.

I would want to monitor the temp at the hottest place my snake can access.
It can probably get under the carpet.

I'd put it under the carpet. Snakes love to burrow under it! I used to use reptile carpet, but aspen is so much easier.
