Thermostat Issue/ Probed Thermometers

Alien Lover
I discovered a little issue with my thermostat this morning. Maybe a week ago I turned the thermostats in the racks up a bit, since it is no longer a guaranteed 84F house temp in the afternoons. They are all Herpstat NDs. I vaguely remember accidentally activating the night drop, and then turning it off. So this morning I'm glancing at the digital thermometers that I have on everything, in plain sight to make sure everything is okay. And I noticed one rack is running 77F. Hmmm, that is the room temp. Hmmm, all the other racks/vivs are 84F. So I look at the settings, wondering if I have accidentally set the night drop. No, it says ND off. So I turn the stat up a few degrees, and it still reads off. Like, OFF, not as in it doesn't need to heat because it's warm enough. So I go back to the ND setting and see that I have two options- the ND function is off OR it can turn the thermostat off completely for the night!! Which is what I had accidentally set. So if I didn't have those probed thermometers prominently displaying the temps, I wouldn't have known I didn't have heat on at night until maybe I had a regurge! Just a little problem averted that I am sharing so it doesn't happen to anyone else.

Thanks for the heads up! Currently, I have no probed thermometers on my racks, just the herpstat thermostat probes. Maybe I should get some!

Thank goodness you saw the potential problem, the snake-keepers' gods were looking out for you!

I've not had a dead UTH or stat yet, but have had the cat accidentally move the dial on the stat, or a stat probe come loose and mess up the temps. Thankfully, as you found, probed thermometers make it so easy to see when something is a little off :)

I've caught a dead UTH with probed thermometers two or three times.

your lucky, i caught a dead one once after getting outta the shower after work. go into my room and what is that smell, it caught fire from the center out to the edges. it was scary. im glad it was under a tub that nothing was in. it was just getting tested to see if it would work. and it was on my helix. everything else was fine. so i have no idea how it happened. but i got a new one for free and sold it. enough of that jazz.
