Thermostat

Hi,
When I adopted my corn I was advised that there was no need for a thermostat on the heat mat. However I've been having temp probs and the mat was old that I had acquired with the tank. After reading loads on here I realize it is definitely best to have one. So have brought a new slightly bigger mat (still only covers a third of the tank) and a thermostat. My problem is I have set the temp to 80, but don't understand if the green light comes on when it gets to temperature or should the green light be on all the time and go off when it gets to temperature? It is a Habistat Thermostat just for Heat Mats. I have the probe on the mat which is covered by a thin layer of aspen.

I am not familiar with that brand, but you do need to raise the temp. The thermostat should be set at 87° with both the thermostat and digital thermometer directly on the glass above the UTH. The cool end will be about 75°.

I would watch the digital readouts and see what happens when the thermostat hits 87°.

Gonna have to get with another UK member on the functionality of a Habistat. They're not too common in the states. I agree with smigon there though, should definitely kick it up a notch. ~85F give or take a couple degrees is optimal. And as already mentioned, you'll want the thermostat's probe on the glass, on the inside of the enclosure, as close to in the middle of the area of the heat mat as possible. That is all assuming an aquarium style enclosure or similar.

Ok thanks both. Think I've figured it out. Habistat is a really popular make in the uk. Not sure how many uk members on the forum, but it would be great if someone from uk could give me their experience of this thermostat.... But all good at present.
