Thiamine Question

For the past few years i've only fed hector live mice. He's been bit a couple times; I had a vet treat the bites. Is it worth it to feed hector live mice when he's getting bit?

I read somewhere that when a mouse is frozen it reduces the amount of thiamine and other nutrients the snake is getting. I was wondering that if a snake was only fed frozen mice would it be just as healthy as a snake that was fed live mice?

I've been wondering this because I'm gonna be getting my cute pastel bp soon and he's little and would need to be fed frozen mice ,and I was just wondering if he was being jipped on his nutrients.

Don't worry...after a few more bites you might not have to worry about the amout of thiamine and other nutrients he getting.

With due respect; I can only take you so seriously. (OP)

I produce balls every year. All I look forward to is when they finally ALL have either sold or take frozen.

Let me get this straight. You feed live because you are afraid he might miss out on thiamin when he is for sure being bitten.

I have a 15 year old corn that thinks life in the fast lane (vitamine defficent with 2 eyes) is just fine.

A few people on this site suggested it a couple years ago and two friends here do the same. I would appreciate it if you don't insult me and instead help me if you truly care about the well being of snakes.

That was not an insult, it was an honest question. I'm just trying to understand the thought process.

Ok, sorry. but I do care about the well being of the snake more than insulting you. so...please stop feeding it live because it seem like it can not defend it self well. F/T is just as good as live. For your snake sake just do it.

Whoa! Not comin' atcha! Just seeing a bit of contradictory info from the original post. I didn't know "what to do" with a post that indicated having a lot of information/experience AND a real lack of it. After reading it again, I defend that leap. I'm not being an Internet tough guy.

Obviously you dont. But of course I'll stop feeding him live mice now, after being insulted on my feeding habits.. He's been fed live mice for 3 years and has only been bit twice. Obviously I'm not doing everything wrong and neither is he.

Obviously not, but of course I will start feeding hector frozen mice. He was fed live mice for 3 years and the both times he was bitten or scratched it wasn't bad at all, like a cut. So Obviously he isn't doing something wrong, he was acting on his natural instincts. It was how/what I was feeding him that was the problem.

Since I posted hurriedly to clear my intentions, here's my take: I have ball pythons at least going four generations on f/t mice. There are tons of sites, threads, links etc. regarding frozen vs. live. More experienced keepers than not prefer thawed, though I "get" the people who feed live. But if your snake is being injured during feeding, that sounds a bit more dangerous than thiamine. That issue's never come up for me, but personally; I'd give my animals a thiamine suppository before treating bite wounds.

It took forever for that first post to go through.. :/

Sure did???
Site problems?

Obviously Yes! I do care about the snake more. I posted, yes.
You also said you took it to the vet for the bites so that make me wonder how bad it was to make a trip there!
But now that you going to feed it f/t is good new for all.
You will find out that in the long run it will be cheaper and easier for you.

Good Luck

I took him because I was concerned about infection from a mouse. Not the severity of the injury.

Very. She can examine and treat injuries to snakes and probe them. That's about it. She's not very up to date on other health issues.

actually you lose nutrients anytime you freeze anything. As a matter of fact, you lose pretty much all your B vitamins. This is why I have to sprinkle vitamins on my ig's salad everyday.
I guess if you are going the F/T method, you should already be dusting them with vitamins. Otherwise I'm guessing there are some unhealthy snakes out there.

Why does everyone attack people who feed live? Yes it can be more dangerous for the snake, but also better nutrients. I can see the argument both sides but all y'all do is attack someone who questions it. I guess if the snake doesn't take F/T they should just starve to death so they don't get hurt?
