Thinking of getting a corn snake

Hello All! Im Izzy. Im fairly new to the reptile scene, got my very first one at the end of June. He was a Rhamopholen brevicaudatus, a pygmy chameleon, I got at my first reptile show (something a pair of friends incited me to) I got lured into the whole "Easy kepper" thing, and boy were they wrong! I learned a bunch of stuff, including he was wild cought :( and was pretty old....

Well, yesterday he passed. Considering their lifespan is 1-1.5 years, and all the trama he had been through (catching, shipping, inexperianced owner) I think he did pretty good... better then most I was told by one Cham lover.

Anyway, while I loved my little cham, I think I want to try something different, and I have always admired corns, but I dont know if corns and I are a good match. I have a variety of other pets, including hermit crabs, fish, some rodents (yes, I can feed live rodents to a snake, I do it at work, just not my pet ones) and some livestock. Will having the rodents int he house drive a snake nuts? I dont want to be mean to it.

Also, what are the best books, and webpages to get set up information?

if a corn isnt a good fit, I guess I'll look into geckos... but snakes are so much kewler! Thanks for any help
 
Hi Izzy. Wise choice on considering a corn, they are great 'beginner' snakes and make wonderful pets (though I am a bit biased!).

As long as the rodents aren't in the same room you shouldn't have any problems at all.

You're more than welcome! You'll be an expert in no time :)

Make sure you let us know when you bring your first one home! Remember - 'yearlings' are the usually the best first choice as hatchlings are such fraglie little things, but corns are very forgiving pets on the whole anyway. Enjoy your new addiction :D
 
you most likely know this, but just incase. do not hold the corn snake directly after holding the rodent. Make sur you wash your hand well

I actually DID know that one! :) but that you for the saftly concern. I have a few friends with balls and central americans :)

Thanks for all the tips! Im excited. It seems In going to have to hold off for a moment on getting it, till I get some things Re-arranged, but that gives me time to get everything perfect!
 
Corns are great snakes and if kept well then are very rewarding animals but one plea i will make is PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not feed live as with corns it is not usually necessary and can't even really be called natural most corns will feed happily on freeze thawed mice and if the mouse is dead it can't harm a snake whereas a live one can. I won't make a whole rant on it i just feel it's one of the key things in captive herpetoculture! Whenver you get your corn havefun choosing one with so many morphs and patterns out there and good luck with it!

um.. the rodent consern was about my pet rodents mentioned above I thought...

And of course not! Im sorry, but I would have a REALLY hard time feeding live.. as I have pet rats and mice... For some reason frozen doesnt bother me though... one reason why i like the corns over some other species... :)
 
Cool just saw the i can feed live and was like aarrgghh i've seen so many people told they have to feed live its ridiculous so ya never know!
