I have a friend whose boyfriend is watching another friends' corn while she is studying abroad. I go to their house today and was completely appalled at the conditions of the poor thing.

First of all, it is a normal that is apparently a year old (approx) and is no bigger than either of my corns, which are less than 6 months old. He couldnt remember the last time he fed her because he always forgets to. Its on repti-bark (no problems) but it hadnt been cleaned in months! Its hard to have a messy corn tank but this was gross. S/he had no water and looked quite dehydrated, and was in his basement. I picked s/he up and was ice cold to the touch. Also, s/he was covered in an incomplete shed. He has fish tanks in the room so the humidity was quite high, but the shed was very bad.

We were hanging out with another guy who owns pythons and boas. When I commented on the corns small size, how cold it was, the incomplete shed, he said that it was fine, corns are from temperate climates so it doesnt matter :eek1: Um ok, but not when its 40 in the room, and her bark is so caked together with feces that she cant get under the substrate to hide or to get on top of the heat mat (which was attached directly onto the tank and plugged straight into the wall - no thermostat).

He gave me a fuzzy to give her and I didnt even get her into the feeding container and she grabbed the fuzzy straight out of my hand and constricted it and ate it while wrapped around my wrist. Definately a hungry snake. I offered to take her as I said I could take better care. I would take her until the friend came back to pick her up. Well, the 'expert' with the pythons said there was no reason for me to take her, she was fine here. So, I wasnt able to convince them to give the snake to me.

Later on, I snuck down into the basement to give her water as she was looking for some after she ate. I cant believe I had to be sneaky to care for a snake thats not even mine. In addition to her conditions, he had two crested gecko's down there. Well, I guess he hadnt checked on them in days and one of them was dead in its hide, stuck to the bottom of the cage. She looked to have been dead for days. Once again, the 'expert' said no worries because she was old (~7yrs, I dont know how old they get). They also have no heat source and are fed solely on baby food.

I dont know what to do. If he didnt hang out with his 'expert' friend I would have been able to take the snake back home with me. Any suggestions? Obviously she is being neglected and I feel bad for her. I am at a complete loss. I wish there was something to do. This is driving me crazy. Tomorrow I will try to call my friend so she can convince her bf to give me the snake.

Sorry for the long post but this is so frustrating... I wish people would take better care of their animals, especially those entrusted into their care from a friend.

wow!!!

call the s.p.c.a ? what would they do with the animals? 'cause it's obviously not just the poor corn that's being neglected! animals in the wild deal with changing temps, yes. but since we put them in captivity, i think it's up to us to give them luxuries in life. so they don't have to deal with that. give them a better life than they could have otherwise. and it doesen't sound like that's even close to happening. you can't 'take' the snake away. but the spca can. i propose that. what does everyone else think?

I agree it's sad and sometimes sickening to see the lack of care that some people give their animals. Animals they supposedly care about. I know the type. Unfortunately, there is little you can usually do. They know everything there is to know about everything and their way of doing things is the right way, period.

Can you talk to the bf when the "expert" isn't around? Maybe talking to the gf is a good idea.

Sometimes there's only so much you can do. :) Hopefully, things will get worked out.

It's a difficult situation because friends are involved, otherwise I sure would have called the SPCA. Maybe in this case you can show some caresheets on the internet and this sites threads to convince at least the boyfriend? I guess if he has some logical thinking going on, seeing many experts and sites saying something else then his supposed to be friend would convince him? And I cannot imgane anyway someone really thinks it's ok to have a snake with partial shed stuck to him. I suspect him to be a little 'afraid' of his friend....

I meant 'supposed to be expert friend'

This is always hard. It's like seeing one of your friends with a fat filthy dog (with the start of what looks like mange). Yup I've seen it. You can only hope that by going through the girlfriend you can get the snake. Just don't blame this guy until you get the snake, he may get defensive & dig in his heals and never give up the snake to you. Poor thing. I hope all ends well. Let us know if you get custody :D

Sometimes you just have to be sad & move on knowing that your animals have a good future. It's sad, but if people were responsible we wouldn't have stray cats & dogs all over. It breaks my heart to see filthy cats all scrawny & uncared for, but I can't take them all in.

Sometimes you just have to know that you aren't responsible for the world & just have to give your own animals the best lives possible. (I truly feel for that snake, but there comes a point when it really is "what can you do?")

I would definitely try to show some caresheets and stuff to him and/or to have the studying friend convince the boyfriend... She'll know what's right for a corn, right? But that's your only chance, if that doesn't work, Preita is all right...

if no other measures work, i know i would try to visit the friend as often as possible, bringing food and water for the snake... i feel so sad for the poor little corn, everytime i read something like this i get a big headache... please keep us informed as to how s/he is doing, Angela!

go for a visit there one day, hide the corn in your pocket or book bag. Play dumb when or IF they check on him/her, oops it got out!! :shrugs:
Contact the true owner on what and why you did it.

Bull. Call the SPCA. This is animal cruelty, plain and simple. I would rather lose a friend than be a part of any animals suffering. And don't worry about your friend losing her corn - she must have known about her boyfriends neglect of his animal. It didn't get that way over night. Please call the SPCA.

This is truly shocking, not just the snake but the dead Gecko ?? was it still in with the alive one ?? I just cant believe some of the things you read..

Even if care sheets were given to him, he obviously doesnt care enough to even bother reading them ?? its worth a try tho.

this story reminds me of when i found a half dead cat. took it to the RSPCA centre and cried my heart out leaving her, she couldnt walk, croaked when tried to cry, drank like she hadnt ever before, and was genrally in such a bad way. Once i ad taken her I drove back home & saw posters up to say "missing cat" turns out the cat was 19 years old, was riddled with cancer & was advised to be put down years ago - the rspca gave them her back, so she is still suffering, the next time she gets out she wont have the energy to move out of the way of a car, and will be in serious danger.

I found out aswell this wasnt the 1st time she had been found in such a rough state & taken to the RSPCA, for them just to keep giving her back to the owners who continue to see her suffer..absolutley shocking

I wish you luck ...keep us up dated

The SPCA already lobys against most herps being pets. This only gives them more evidence.

I would try to contact the friend who owns the snake & see if an exchange of care can be arranged.

Wow. One of my friends step-mothers has an anery cornsnake. Last time I went over I talked to her about the snake. She didn't know when it was last fed, She was feeding those disgusting mice from our local pet store and the poor thing didn't have a hide. It's heat sorce was a heat rock. So a few days after that I went over there with a lot of Corn snake care sheets. I havn't seen the poor thing since that day. I really hope it's doing much better and healthy.

Update!

Well, it has all worked out! They finally gave me the snake. When I picked him up, he had recently shed, but in several pieces, and the tip of his tail hadnt shed. But it was already too late, the tail tip is already black. Also, there was no water in the cage, and I guess the last time he ate was over a week ago. They also said that they fed him 3 pinks, and that he should be good for a while. Um, no. This snake is 32g and almost 23 inches long, he should not be eating pinks anymore. Either way, I fixed up his new viv and got a few pics before letting him settle in. Hes a very pretty normal, and I am happy with my new addition. Now I just gotta fatten him up. Hes supposed to be an 04.

I am so relieved to know you were able to rescue him. He's beautiful, but he does need some appropriate food items. Great job! Keep up posted on his growth. I'm sure he'll grow like a weed now.
