Those pet shops make me sooo mad!!!

LOL Blkkat, my friend and I are still researching different grants now. You know some are really specific as to what type of business they apply to. GRRR. We live in a town with only 1 petshop within 50-60 miles, and their conditions are filthy, yet it makes a killing because it's the only one. And their reptile selection as far as animals AND supplies is almost nonexistant. They mostly carry birds and fish. If I come across any thing promising, I'll be sure to let you know!

lol kriz, found it last yesterday, saturday
and my flipping god!!!

:nope: :angry01: :headbang: :realhot: :twohammer :flames: :eek1: :( :crying: :uzi:

i was completely and utterly disgraced, my boyfriend had to drag me outta there sharpish before i blew a huge fuse right in the middle of the shop,

i know exactly what you mean, the boas, there was about 3 or 4 in one small viv with just a couple of hides and one water bowl, the burmese pythons were gorgeous, the normal and albino ones both are in small viv's only enough room to curl up, only on newspaper! didnt see no waterbowl at all.

there was one milk snake (i think, cannot remember now) that had only half shed, i said to my boyfriend that it needed a lot of tlc, soaked and eased off but the shop certainly would not be prepared for that!

the cornsnakes, OMFG! dont even get me started, not only was there about 12 in one small viv, but there was hatchlings with what looked to me, 2-4 year olds, i was like what the ???! its outragious.

i did not see one clean viv, all had poop and bits of shed in them all, dusty substrate, well, the few viv's that did have substrate, the rest just had a few sheets of newspaper!

not to mention i did not see one temperature or hydometer in any of the viv's at all! i just thought what complete ass wipes! sorry for the language here but i was soo gonna blow my top but my boyfriend didnt want me too, i nearly cried, i did not expect it to be that bad!

well im now searching the net for a head office address, me, my boyfriend and family and friends are all gonna complain like mad!

hey, do you know the reptile place next door to jollye's? that place used to sell snakes, not any more though, coz years ago me and my grandad was in there and the snakes wre being treated worse than jollye's, me and my grandad got him closed down! LOL, now hes open again but is only allowed to sell snakes equipment and insects, this is what we are now gonna do with jollye's, those snakes seriously have to be rescued asap. cannot stand people like them, when i do find out who to complain to i will pm you their address if you like and you can complain too, the more the better, my boyfriend reckons we should start a petition. lol. bless him, he dont even like snakes and yet even he was disgraced by how they were being treated!

i got pictures of the BP's and corns on my phone camera but cannot get them off my phone so what i might do if the top peeps dont do anything im gonna go back and take my digital camera and sell my story of something to papers or even take them to the rspca, they will certainly do something, thats for sure. LOL.

anyways will stop ranting for now. talk soon.

Omg!!! really, :roflmao: i wondered why he only sold equipment.

On the bottom row were the 10 ball pythons still there?

Thanks for checking it out btw. that was really nice

If you could send me the address that would be great

It's horrible to hear stuff like that. I think a lot of pet store owners just ignore the reptiles beacuse if you don't know what your doing, these animals have no way of telling you. If the puppies or kittens in the store are sick and unwell, customers notice things like runny eyes and noses, listlessness, couching, etc. Not to say that some store owners don't ignore these ones too, but your adverage person can't tell that a snake isn't fine, beacuse it can't whine or bark or look pathetic to the untrained eye. I've also been to a aweful little pet store where all of that animals generally looked healthy (besides the bad overcrowding of the rodents) except for the reptiles and fish tanks, the two animals that have absolutly NO WAY of telling you what they need. I felt horrible, and had the same instictive reaction to take them all home (I even had a thought of stealing the tree boa that was in a cage with a heat lamp a foot above it's head, and clearly NO humidity, plus little water, who's cage lock was broken and could easily have been removed, that's how bad I felt) All of the snakes had layers of thick folds in there skin, showing how badly dehidrated they were, and as someone metioned above, there fecus resembled that of a cat. The cages were small and very dirty, and all the viv's were littered with past sheds in hundreds of little pieces, like the skins had just flaked off. There was a beatiful little baby albino boa with it's sibling, and it's body was so shrivelled and covered in flaked skin that I wasn't sure if it was alive anymore. The women was just watering these guys when I arived, and EVERY single animal went straight for the water bowl as soon as it started falling. This one little snake was even drinking as the stream of water fell on his head, something my corn would NEVER allow me to do (she runs away from the misting bottle!) It makes me fell sad a upset just thinking about it again, and it's places like that that make me want to freak out on the stupid, ignorant people that just want to make a few bucks of these tortured creatures, and don't care to find out there needs before they stock the store with them.

yep really kriz, my boyfriend thinks me and you should meet up and fight against them as a team, lol, but no balls there anymore, not one single snake at all, i specifically went back in there to check, lol. if he ever did start selling snakes again i know he would be doing it illegally, ha ha.

oops i almost forgot to say i could not find an address at the moment but i did find a telephone number and an e-mail address, the number is open from 8am to 6pm monday-friday 020 8363 6980 and the e-mail is [email protected]
feel free to contact them, and that goes to everyone on this board, the second i find an address of some sort i will be posting it ok.

ok this is the e-mail i have sent to them just now, very similar to the post i posted above with a few adjustments, here it is ~

hello there
now i would like to make an official complaint about the jollyes store in crews hill, Enfield, i was not sure who to send this to and this address was the only one i could find, if its not you who deals with complaints then please get back to me with a postal address or web address, thank you.

now i was completely and utterly disgraced with how the reptiles were being treated, my boyfriend had to drag me out of there sharpish before i blew a huge fuse right in the middle of the shop,

now i own snakes myself and the way the boas were being housed is not right, there was about 3 or 4 in one small viv with just a couple of hides and one water bowl, the 2 Burmese pythons are absolutely gorgeous! however they were both in small viv's only enough room to curl up, only on newspaper! didn't see no water bowl at all.

the corn snakes, OMG! don't even get me started, not only was there about 12 in one small viv, but there was hatchlings with what looked to me, 2-4 year olds, i was like what the ???! its outrageous. for starters if one regurged, how would you know? if one pooped, how'd you know? if one was sick, they would all be sick. if one sheds, which one is it? and lastly cannibalism, it happens ya know? the hatchlings are at risk every day with the elder ones. also the hatchlings would be intimidated by the elder ones, not to mention stress, which then could lead to the snake refusing to eat, loosing a lot of weight or even death. even if they are only being kept together until there sold, what if there not sold for months? do they just keep them together? its just wrong, they are not thinking of the animals at all.

i did not see one clean viv, all had poop and bits of shed in them all, dusty substrate, well, the few viv's that did have substrate, the rest just had a few sheets of newspaper!

not to mention i did not see one temperature or humidity gauge in any of the viv's at all! i just thought what complete ass wipes! sorry for the language here but i was soo gonna blow my top but my boyfriend didn't want me too, i nearly cried, i did not expect it to be that bad!

well i would like the top head office's address, either postal or web, me, my boyfriend and family and friends are all gonna complain about this.

I'm sorry if I'm coming across as rude but these animals do not deserve to be treated this way, keeping reptiles is not as easy as everyone may think, they need a lot of care and attention. I'm sorry to say but i cannot stand people like them,

i got pictures of the BP's and corns on my phone camera but cannot get them off my phone so if you would like proof i can go back with my digital camera and then send you pictures of how they are being treated. if you do nothing about this matter and disregard this e-mail, i will go higher and i will get my point across somehow, either by the Internet or newspaper.
i would like to hear what your gonna do about this and hope that you contact me to let me know. hope to hear soon. thank you for your time.
regards,
Anny

let me know if i did the right thng or not please. thank you.

thanx oldhand
:D

Thanks to everyone for the support.

Nice 1 missy!!!
I have just e-mailedthem too, kinda along the same lines as you
Like if they trat their animals like that then they don't deserve to be a pet shop. etc etc.

THanks oldhand too.

Anybody reading this thread just email [email protected]

I'm just curious but since everyone is worried about the snakes, does no one here have problems with cats and dogs being locked up in tiny little cubby holes???

Dear jollyes,
I am writing to you to make a formal complaint about the housing of animals at the jollyes in crews hill enfield. The reptiles especially are just neglected. They are just left there, no fresh water regularly, and in some cases no water at all!!! The burms are in viv's so mall that they cannot fit inside them without having to curl up many times. If you are going to stock these animals i recomend you find out their needs and how much space they require before doing so rather than just craming them into the small spaces you have left. I cannot believe anybody could be so cruel as you are being to the snakes. The corns are 11 in a viv, that is actually too small to house one. There were 10 ball pythons in a viv of the same size. I was in utter dismay about the treatment of them that i felt it neccessary to take action. i would advise that take this complaint seriously and do not just discard it, forcing me to take further action.
yours
Chris

That was the e-mail i sent them by the way.

If enough of us e-mail them, the are bound to change their ways. So come on ppl don't be shy, the more the merrier.

If anybody reading this lives in london, i recommend that you go there and see for yourself what missy and I are so angry about. You won't believe your eyes. It is horrible

Spirit i agree, i always feel sorry for the dogs when i go to pet shops. I thought they would have whole rooms for dogs, not just tiny perspex boxes. I might have to e-mail them about them aswell lol.

I have just seen some pic's of how you keep your snakes and other "pets". My question is what would you recomend to a new snake owner on the care of their snake? Would you recomend 11 snake's in a viv?
How do you feed them? do you jus throw 11 mice in and hope for th best? Or do you feed them individually?
If you don't know how to look after ANY animal, then please don't stock them. I work part time for a pet shop dealing specificly in reptiles and amphibians, and would not dram of keeping MORE then 2 corn in a viv, and kings should be housed individually. Please take the required action as i am a volentere worker for a dog shelter and work with the RSPCA on a volentry basis to help re-home the dogs. If the situation HAS NOT changed within a fortnight (21/02/2005) i will report this and have you shut down.
Yours
John

That was my rant, please keep me updated people as that wasn't a threat it was a promise, as shops like this make me physically sick.

I have never heard of something so sickning. I'm lucky that all the shops where I live take care of all their animals, and those that have reptiles have employees that are either part of my herp society, or own their own reptiles at home. This is just horrible.

That what i think, and why i work in my local shop part time, just to keep everything ticking over nicley (i used to be full time and run the reptile side of things, but now have other commitments). I still do the incubating thou, and take them home with me (last year and the year before, this year when their ready).
It's what got me started with snakes over 5 years ago, so i hate it when some shop's do thing's like this. Its disgraceful.

Everyone, Email the people from jollyes, then post your e-mail here, like oldhand, missy and i have done. The person with the most "convincing" e-mail wins. LOL.
I want to hear what you guys r e-mailing them.

Missy, a petition sounds like a gr8 idea if they ignore us
(after the rspca and/or the press hears about it lol :dgrin: )
Would it be possible to do it online, without people physically having to sign it?

KRIZ i'm from up north (lancashire) and need someone to check on thing's for me, before i take it further. Do you mind checking things for mr (or missy)? Just so i know if things are improving, and weather the rspca need to be brought in.
It's much appreaciated even if you can't.

Email sent!

Here is a copy of the email I just sent off the Jollye's...

Dear Sirs,

It has come to my attention that in your store in Crews Hill, Enfield, does not properly house your reptiles, nor provide them with the basic needs of fresh water, correct temperature, hiding places or food. This is deplorable and inhumane. How can you condone such filthy environments and overcrowding? You cannot possibly offer any reasonable explanation or excuse. If you cannot adequately provide for these animals, you should not carry them in your store. I can only wonder at the conditions of other animals in your care. It is sickening to me and most reptile enthusiasts that you would continue to run your business in this manner. I know that there will be reports made to the RSCPA about your facility. Please make the appropriate changes to your reptile housing or stop selling reptiles. Unless you take prompt action, you may be closed down.

Kathy Nicks

I hope it does some good.
