Hi everyone!

I have been lurking for a little more than a month now, so I guess an introduction is overdue. I'm Katie, and I've had a love for all scaly critters since I was very young. Kept water turtles(red eared sliders and a snapper!) and box turtles(eastern and three toed) all through my youth.

But, Its been a few years since I've been a momma to any herps and I've missed them! So I decided to start again, and internet research led me to fall in love with snakes(which were always expressly forbidden by my mother when living at home!) I figured corns would be the best to get started with, though I really like hognoses too! ;)

Really, I'm kinda surprised and disappointed by the reactions of everyone I've told. The Family and co-workers... they all know I've loved reptiles all my life. I aspired to be the next Steve Irwin at some points xD But when I say I'm getting a snake they recoil like I've spontaneously sprouted a third arm. Seriously? D: I don't understand why people loathe snakes so much. I try to explain that corn snakes in particular are typically sweeties but people find it hard to believe. Guess I get to be an animal ambassador soon! At the very least my husband does not need convincing, he loves snakes too.

I do not yet have my snake but I'm gonna head to the Austin Reptile Expo at the end of the month and hopefully find a nice yearling to go home with. Its been a difficult wait! But its been giving me ample time to prepare the viv. Just a few more weeks now...

I'm thinking about going to the Austin Reptile as well, I heard it's great! Plus, what a great way to spend labor day weekend.

I think snake-hating is more prominent in Texas. Everyone I always talk to about snakes or reptiles always says, "the only good snake is a dead snake." I think it's just plain rude!

Anywho, welcome! :D

I've also been really disappointed by people's reaction to snakes. When you tell them you have a pet snake they look at you with an expression of both disgust and "Why would you DO such a thing?!" Ugh.

When I volunteer at a wildlife sanctuary near where I live, I am annoyed when I hear parents saying ignorant things to their kids: "Snakes are icky." or "Mommy's afraid of bats." Congratulations, you've just passed on your irrational fear to your child. Great parenting...

Steve Irwin has also been an inspiration to me over the years.
Good luck with picking out your new scale baby, and welcome to the forum!
