I have a question about the sterilite tubs.

Do you drill a hole to fit a lock on the lid, or do they snap shut securely enough to prevent snake escapes? I know that you need to drill holes for air around the sides. I am going to need a bigger viv for my little guy this spring/summer, and would be happy to get a sterilite tub if it turns out to be a good habitiat.

Hey Cat, when we used Sterilites without racks this summer, we put binder clips along the rim. That was enough to hold in hatchling snakes, but it was a pain in the rear to unhook all those clips to get the snakes out or feed/water them. We eventually moved them all to the Critter Ranch style critter keepers. They are a little bit more user friendly.

As far as the half a mouse goes... I wouldn't worry much about it. Any nutritional imbalance would be very slight and corrected the next feeding. I would, like Mike, find it kind of gross and messy to feed chopped mice. The few times our snakes have hit and broken a f/t mouse have been disgusting to say the least.

Wow, horrendous thread drift on this one.

Anyway, I attempted to go the Sterilite route, but I just don't like it. I don't like the way it looks. That's just my opinion.

As far as things I wish I would have known... I don't have anything really. I don't think I've gained any knowledge since beginning to keep snakes a year ago. I guess you could say I've become a more efficient keeper, more in-tune with the snakes I suppose, but that comes through experience.

Yeah you sacrifice good looks for practicality when you go the cheap route often, but if you're like me and don't really care what it looks like as long as the animal in it enjoys it... I guess when I move out I'll make a really nice display viv with lots of fake plants and decor, but for now my babies are perfectly happy with tp rolls :)

Oh yeah, I agree with you on the cheap decorations. TP rolls, paper bowls, tupperware water bowls, and cardboard boxes can be found in my vivs. I just like the look of glass or plexiglass better than a Sterilite. I use a Sterilite for feeding my big guy and for any quarantines.
