To Early for Eggs?

Cflaguy

Old School Snakeman
Good afternoon everyone. This is my first thread on this site. I have had snakes (predominately Corns) for 25 years. But an ex had me snake free for 6 years. Things have changed. Right now I have a young butter corn I believe is gravid. She has a huge tail section right now. In Jan. her cage mate was chasing her around so I assumed eggs were on the way. But not this early. My concern is of course egg binding but...
This year I had a yellow rat who deficated sporatically. One morning he passed. And his tail section was thick. I started today a lukewarm bath regiment for her just in case of constipation. And placed an egg box. She also now has her own tank as well. I know I made a rookie mistake leaving her in with a fellow hatchling but....
Any opinions on her condition? :shrugs:

First of all how old/big is she? If she's still pretty small I would keep a close eye on her because you don't want her to become eggbound. Do you know specifically what caused the death of your rat? How close together were they housed (next to eachother, same room, etc). If you're really worried I'd call your vet and see what they think.

Hi Katie,

The yellow rat was quarantined for six months and ate and deficated well. Whatever hit him killed him in about a month and a half so you can see my concern. After his quaratine he was in a cage beside Butters. Now she had two cagemates neither of which show any signs of a fat tail?
In the last couple of days Butters has been exploring more then usual. Makes me think she is gravid. BTW, she did last eat on the 2nd of this month, she is still healthy in that regard.
As far as her age, this is the first year she is able to breed. I aquired her in winter 2004 as a baby.

Do you know how much she weighs? I have some 2004s that are way too small for breeding but I know others (cough cough...Dean...cough ;) ) that have corns that grow really fast (but are really healthy). Are both of her cagemates males or are they different sexes? Is there any way you can post a pic of her?

Well PT,
Is there a way to post pics on this forum? I'll check it out. Don't know her weight but she is pushing 32inches. She is mature enough; although I don't like it. Both her cagemates were males. One a Snow and the other an A-mel. I bought them all at the same time so I called them the triplets. I just made a rookie mistake and waited to long to seperate them.
Sorry but any current pics I have of her are to big to post. Feel free to E-mail me and I'll send ya some.

She was Gravid

She is laying eggs as we type. Let's just hope there is no binding?

Keep us posted on how she is doing.... and of course photos would be candy-eyes for us
You can put your photos on Webshots, they are pretty good.
Good luck ;)

Hoping for the best here

No eggs since the 1st. I just took Butters out and felt her up. I can't feel any egss inside. Just to be sure, I'm taking her to the vet for an X-ray.

I guess you could have some egg binding if it's been a couple of days and only one egg.
I've had snakes take longer than a couple of days to finish laying if they didn't like their nest box or feel safe so it coud be good idea to give her a couple of choices of where to lay her eggs.
I hope it all works out

i always wanted to know what eggbound means i only have 4-7 month old snakes.
Here, check out this link, it pretty much explains it all : http://animal.discovery.com/guides/reptiles/diseases/eggbinding.html<o></o><o></o>
This one is also good : http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=17&cat=1831&articleid=3010

I find it is always good to have two trusted links to search your information on as well as the Forum. If you cannot find it by Google-ing it or by the search in the Forum, then it would be better to ask.

As you could read on the links I gave you, what causes egg binding is most of the time (but not always) due to the owner... sham this happens

7 eggs, final count

And her visit to the doctor was a good one. No eggs, no binding. She even just ate a meal. A small fuzzy mouse.
She is a little dehydrated, should I bath her?
And not sure of the fertility of the eggs. Most are pretty elongated. They're very white, but I have had eggs turn bad and I have had eggs hatch in a similiar state. Keep your fingers crossed.

oh wow, great news.... I am very happy for you / her.

How can you find out if they are viable eggs? Do you hold them to the light? :shrugs:

Am not sure about the dehydration but if she ate that should already give her some "moisture" unless I am mistaken (tell me if I am). Doesn't she drink?
I don't know if that will help but mine just shed and she was staying on the branch not moving much on and just after being blue so I was misting the tank due to previous uncomplete shed, I then sprayed her with lukewarm water to see if she would like it and if it would help and to my surprise she drank what fell on her and on the plants around her, etc... Maybe yours would respond the same way than mine, always worth trying.

It's perfectly normal for the eggs to be very elongated and capsule shaped in the beginning and then they plump out over the coming month. Corn eggs put on an extra 50% of their lay-weight between laying and hatching.
