To much light?

SWINGRRRR

I need/want a 'Cane
I am planning on putting 3 10" fluorescent lights at the top of my viv. The will all 3 be on timers and be planned to come on and off with the different times of the day, think; recreating the rising and setting of the sun.

Does anyone think this is a bad idea? Will it be too much light for the snake?

O, btw, this is my first post. I have a Snow Corn that’s about 5' long. He was a breeder that was no longer wanted so I took him. My main experience has been with pythons and Iguanas. I just could not stand to see the snake euthanized.

Hi I don't think it will cause damage to the snake but snakes do not need uv lights. Hope this helps

Thanks. I knew about teh UV light thing. Like I said, my main experince is with Pythons. 12-14 hours of daylight can stress them out, espcially when its 2-3 fixtures on.

I plan to put an underground hide in the viv as well.

Now I just need to think up a good name for him.

I have fluorescent lights in a couple acryllic cages and they raise the temps so much I can't use them...

Try cold cathode strip lights - they produce no heat whatsoever.

I am under the impression that corn snakes do not need additional lighting. I have a 8 yr. snow and a 3 month old snow. they get the natural light that filters into the living room which gets the afternoon sun. my king snake has a light turned on at night for a short while and the 8 month old normal has one turned one for a while, generally when we are in the livingroom and it is for our viewing not their health.

Do they make bulbs that go into a standard fluorescent fixture?

Take a look on ebay. I believe they are mainly used to light the enclosures of computers. They are supplied in pairs and are approx 12" long x 1/2" wide and require no fixture at all. Powered by a DC adapter they are cheap to run and if your adapter has variable voltage you can have different levels of brightness. They attach to the inside of your viv by use of self adhesive pads or for a safer alternative use cable ties. They are available in many different colours(I use blue) and are cheap to buy - approx £6-8($12-16) in the UK and I believe they are even cheaper in the States.

Well, I work midnights and my window is completely blocked out. I just wanted something to re-create the sun movement for him.

I plan to have a double ceiling. The lights affixed to a peg board, then a bit of space, then a solid piece of melamine, with vents on the side. Hopefully that will vent some of the heat.

I have a great idea in my head and my buddy that builds cabinets is going to help me on Wed. Hopefully ya'll will be impressed with the viv/cabinet

From what I have read on here many people keep their snakes in a dark room, also corn snakes usually only venture out early morning and evening they aren't out during the day. just my .02 susan

My room doesn't get much sun at all though there is a window. I only have the lights on when I am in the room so they are in darkness most of the time and they are doing fine. I could certainly understand wanting something to help you see them better, though mine are almost always hiding in the hide boxes anyway, so I'd only get a better view of the subtrate..

It's really up to you, but be sure you check what temps they get to if the lights will be on while you are away. Long ago I had a few little 10 gal tanks with local species and live plants in them under floourescent lights (for the plants and for viewing) and they really got quite warm. I found that rather than needing to suppliment heat for them (as I thought I would need) I was having to find ways to cool them.. So it can be an issue. You can certainly solve the problem though, I did it by moving them to a cooler room.

Good Luck!

I get what ya'll are saying. I may just stick to a cathode or 2 and a blue night light.

I have been researching the cathodes since it was brought up. Seems like a good, cheap option.

Hell, not sure how to edit, but heres another try at the pics.
