Too big meal??

Hi!

I have a cornsnake that is about 6 mo old. It is about a foot long. I have been feeding him the last 4 -5 meals a with a fuzzy mice. It has gone ok. However, today when I needed to have more food for him I went to a different pet store where I got him a dead, fresh fussy hamster.

My question is: This fussy hamster is bigger than the fuzzy mice and my snake is right now trying to eat it. It just looks too big for him to sqeeze down! What happens if he cannot get it down all?? Will he spit it out? Can it be too big for him to eat without him knowing it in advance??

Please let me know, since I did not have time to search the site and all the info here.

Thanks in advance,

Anita

as long as the fuzzy is 1 & 1/2 times the size of snake you should be ok. Without pictures it is hard to tell. Good luck!

He ate it!

Hi again!

Thanks Brianna. That helped to know the size (the hamster was just about that size compared to the snake). And it also helped that my Snakey actually finished eating the hamster. I guess it was not too big for him after all. :)

But he sure has a big bulge now!

Anita,
Take the time now to do the research. For the health of you snake.

My local spot for feeder were out of the size I was looking for so I opt to get the smaller food size to prevent a regurge.
Your snake still not in the clear yet, Keep the heat up to 84 degrees to help with digestion and don't bother him for two or more day after feeding.

Here a few good links to read.

If you have any other question. don't hesitate to post.

Good Luck.

Thank you Lennycorn for your reply. :)

I have done my homework regarding the snake care, but since this was kind of an unusual situation with new food (both size and variety) from a new pet store I was not quite sure. Anyway, Snakey ate it and he seems fine. I have not seen any regurges and he is hiding under all his aspen shavings. I will let him be for at least 3 days before I pick him up.

I usually buy mice fuzzies from Petco but they were out of them and their pinkies looked all bloody and icky so I went to this other store instead. At least this meal was fresh (never frozen).

Thanks again,

Anita
