too much substrate?

I'm using Flexwatt for my uth. it heats the floor of the viv up fine but the heat doesn't seem to transfer the the substrate. I'm using about 3 inches of pine bedding for substrate so she can burrow around because she loves it but i'm thinking i might have too much because i can't get the top of the substrate warm without cooking the bottom!! any help?

Pine? Switch to aspen asap. If the temps are fine below the substrate she'll burrow to reach it. Dont worry about the top of it.

Do you know the temp of the viv floor directly above the Flexwatt? It's not too hot is it, do you have it regulated? I agree, the snake will burrow down to the depth that gives the temp it likes.

i took the newspaper out to see if that helps. the temp on the floor itself I keep at 90. but the top of the substrate is 76.

I usually pile the substrate up to 2-3 inches in the cool part, but leave the area immediately over the heat source (I use a UTH) with only an inch or so. Prevents overheating under the substrate and under-heating on top.
