Two die after tornado hits Lake City

LAKE CITY, Fla. (AP) _ Two people have died from injuries they received Friday when a tornado ripped through this north Florida city, officials said.

A woman was killed when a tree fell on her mobile home and a man was killed while attempting to connect a generator after the power was knocked out by the twister which struck Friday morning, said Harvey Campbell, a spokesman for Columbia County Emergency Management.

Authorities have not identified the victims.

The tornado, which tore a swatch about 2½ miles in the northern part of Lake City, damaged a few businesses and more than 20 homes. Power is still out in much of the community, Campbell said.

The tornado was spawned by a fast-moving storm which raced across northern Florida, producing high winds and heavy rains.

State emergency officials said the tornadoes touched down in the tiny coastal town of Keaton Beach on the Gulf of Mexico and Capitola, a neighborhood on the outskirts of Tallahassee. In Capitola, a handful of homes were destroyed, while others were damaged.

Dian Chase, who lost her home in 1992 when Hurricane Andrew hit Homestead, was happy to survive the weather outside Tallahassee. She was knocked to the floor in her bedroom when high winds blew the home off its foundation, ripped away the roof and shredded the brick fireplace.

"It was just awful," said Chase. "This is my second round."

Nearby, high winds blew Vivian Norton's sport utility vehicle off the road and an 8-inch thick tree limb impaled the vehicle just after she and her daughter had gotten out.

"It was real scary," Norton said. "I just thank God we got out of it."

I am glad to hear that you are ok. Both of you be careful. We had Tornado warnings/watchs this week as well. So stay safe!

There was a tornado here in Ewing like 3-4 years ago; it destroyed half of the town... There is still a mattress on the car dealership..
I happen to like C.E. and I would love to be in a tornado.. as long as nobody dies..

It's not just that people die- it's that your home and everything in it is destroyed. My snakes would be gone, likely killed. Birds would be killed. I've been in a tornado, and I didn't die, and I didn't even really think I would, but it cost nearly $100,000 to replace everything.

It's been raining here since yesterday afternoon. My new flowers are mostly happy, though some look worse for the wear. The boxies don't have any shelter- they just have to dig underground. I went to check on them this afternoon, to see if they looked cold and miserable, but they were cavorting in their pond! It's in the 60's.

I think there was one in Hague or Starke or Brooker- somewhere up there about a month ago.

This is my goal for next spring, after they start producing them in Brooksville (because they cost $1.50/mile to ship). I'll put some sort of racks out there so I just have to carry bins out. I'm not sure how you get electricity into it. It weighs 11,000 pounds.

Thanks for the info.

Wow; I'm glad you're okay. I guess I should stop complaining about the snow and cold up here. It really amounts to just an inconvenience compared to what you guys have to deal with. Those sheds look pretty cool; I've never heard of above-ground shelters.
