Travelling

Gintha

*stretches* I'm out!
I'll be going on vacation this summer for a couple weeks, and will need to take the snakes with me as my sister won't take care of them for me and everyone else I know is terrified of them LOL. They're used to big 33 gallon standard tanks which I obviously can't take to Montreal in the back seat hehe. Will they be fine in large steralite tubs for the 2 weeks? I hate needing to stress them out like this, but if I leave them here they'll be in a 115* F room with very little light and no one to change their water, this is the only alternative I have. Is there anything else anyone can think of for their journey? They'll be travelling after digesting so I won't need to worry about regurges in the car... but its a 15 hour drive each way. <~Worried momma.

Here's what I would do. I don't think you should take them. I'd try to get your sister to carry out her part in this simple plan. If your tanks have screen tops, this should work. Your snakes can fast for two weeks, no problem. Right before you leave, change their water. Leave an empty bowl in each of the tanks too. Tell your sister to pour water in the empty bowls at the midpoint of your vacation. If the tops are screens, she won't even have to open the lids. :)

For what it's worth, we've asked the local pet store snake expert (and my local corn mentor!) to babysit our snake-kids while we're on vacation. Do you have some pet store clerk you'd trust your babies to?

Good luck!

I'm afraid my sister would forget to give them water, which is why I decided to take them with me. Plus I was going to take them to a good herp vet while I was there just to be sure they are all as healthy as I think they are hehe.

I wouldn't trust the pet store people here with one of my guppies, let alone the snakes. Their "corn snake" which is an albino black rat has been mouth breathing for a week and they say its normal ~,~ I can see pus in her throat, poor thing.. if I had a spare $700 I'd buy her.

Too bad. I'd still try to arrange it with sis. Somehow make it worth her while to do it right. I just think this will be very stressful for them. A vet visit will only add to this. :( If you end up taking them, I wouldn't plan on feeding them during the vacation at all, and then I'd still wait until you've been back for a few days to try it.

WOW, I went away for two days, pet sitter won't even look at vivs. When I got home one water bowl was fine the other bone dry. Same room both had about 2-3 cups of water when I left. The snake is fine. On the other hand I brought a hatchling home with me in a small sterilite container and it was definatey stressed when we got home. We had to constantly move it from sun beating in on it through car windows, five hour drive. Can't you find anyone to come in and water your snakes???

I don't really know anyone locally who I'd trust with a house key, and most folks here are TERRIFIED of snakes. I could take them to the vets as a sitter, but I think that would be just as stressful as taking them with me... and it would be $50 a day per snake ~,~ I thought about getting one of those cat auto-waterers, but had a vision of the bottle, full of water, with a dead snake stuck inside O.O Maybe I can convince my little bro... hehe I'd just stay home but the trip is to go see my elderly, and somewhat sick, gradparents.

You know, we/someone should set up a "snake buddy" program, help people find other local herp owners to help "babysit" snakes. I'm super lucky that my friend with whom I'm "cat buddies" with (we catsit for each other) used to have snakes, so won't have a problem changing my girls water when I'm on vacation, but I don't know what I'd do if he said no.

Is there any local herp society where you live? Maybe if you could meet some other snake owners, you might be able to find someone trustworthy you could give your house key to so you'd know your baby would be okay at home.

Here, we have pet sitting services you can hire to come in however often you want to take care of your pets. You usually have to set up an appointment with them ahead of time so they have time to come by and learn what you want them to do. I've never actually used one, but have considered it when I've needed to be gone from the mammals for a weekend. If you live in a city, this shouldn't be too difficult to find.

There are very few snake owners here, 100 known in the entire province, no societies, nothing. Its not a very snake friendly place really. My sister has said we'll talk about her taking care of them tomorrow, so maybe she'll change her mind. I hope so.. I hate stressing them out too much. Treasure is used to travelling, but Hunter freaks out, and I don't know about Onyx yet. Treasure comes to school sometimes hehe.. hes a teaching snake at the Vet University =) We call him Professor Treasure LOL.

This may be a totally stupid reply so pardon me if I end up making a fool of myself lol.

I was just wondering could you not purchase one of those Exo-Terra waterfalls for each viv and keep it in there while you are gone?

They come in different sizes and I would think they would hold enough water to hold them the full 2 weeks, I could be wrong but it is just a suggestion.

Since it is a waterfall it is recirculating water so you wouldn't have to worry about stagnant water in their vivs. Plus the components that pump the water are all hidden and enclosed to prevent your "babies" from getting sucked in or injured.

Like I said, maybe it is a stupid idea but just something I thought about :shrugs:

Posting a pic in case you don't know what their product is:

It's a thought, but if you have to run a power to it I would be leery running something like that while I was away and couldn't check on it.
But I know nothing of this product.

Wouldn't it be the same safety issue with running their heating appliance while gone?

I have two of these for Iguana. I thought about them for my snakes tanks, but you have to screen off the back or the snake can crawl in, my friends did, got tangled and died. Also they do seem to run out of water pretty fast, certainly in two weeks.

Sorry, let me back up.
First I referring to the post of leaving a snake alone for ?? was if a week or so??. And using a product that I know nothing of, that is power by electricity and pumps water. So all this just makes me leery.
Just my thoughts that all.

Yep Lenny I was being a dope, lol. But I was just wondering, atleast now I know for future reference. I didn't think about those implications. Live and learn!

Chalk it up to one more brain cell I aquired tonight lol.

Well, hell girl, ......If you happen to acquire a few more brain cells that you could spare, feel free to throw some my way.
I been lacking them for a while. :grin01:

Enjoy your night,

Lennycorn

I did look into those waterfalls, but for $100 each I decided to pass. This time of year I unplug the UTHs anyhow, my room is between 80 and 115 from May-October LOL... its weird... icy all winter boiling all summer! I have 6 fans in my room for the snakes and me, 2 for me, one for each viv hehe. Thats how I kept Treasure cool enough last summer, he got a $50 stand fan for being sooo cute =)
