Trying to get some corns from Virginia - help?

Hi all,

I'm trying to get some CB locality corn hatchlings from a seller in Virginia. He has never shipped, so I'm looking at using Ship Your Reptile and paying for everything from my end. He keeps wanting to use the PO. I know you're not suppose to ship snakes and turtles via the PO, so I'm trying to figure out other options.

Another thought is if any one here is a FedEx shipper, is near Powhatan VA and would be willing to get them and ship to me, I'd pay you a reasonable fee for your bother/help.

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for any help or guidance.

Well, I called Ship Your Reptile and am using them. Had the box and such mailed to the guy today and will get the shipping label to him on Monday.

4VAC15-360-50. Propagation and sale of certain amphibians and reptiles.

It shall be lawful to propagate and sell certain native species of captive bred amphibians and reptiles with a Permit to Propagate and Sell Certain Wildlife or a Permit to Hold and Sell Certain Wildlife under such restrictions and conditions as the board may prescribe

You may want to make sure he has this permit. If not he, and you, are breaking VA law. The fact that he is willing to violate USPS regulations would have stopped this deal cold for me...

Sorry it's not helping, but I'm not sure I'd want to deal with anyone prepared to send live animals through the regular mail. It's both illegal and cruel, with a high possibility of the animals sustaining injury or being killed in transit, as employees won't know they're handling live animals.

I hadn't had time to read anything posted till now. I'll check with him. I suspect he has the permits since he is a herpetologist and involved in rescue. But, yes the mailing bugged me, which is why I'm doing the shipping from my end. I've read of others doing the same thing.

I hope everything pans out for you & that the guy is legit.
Someone once asked me to ship a gecko via USPS, to save on money. I told her no, for the safety of the animals, & she then told me she was going to look elsewhere, which was fine with me. She's on my "do not sell" list now.

"I suspect he has the permits since he is a herpetologist and involved in rescue."

He should know better. He should also know VA natives are not legal to sell, permit or no. It allows for captive bred exceptions, and not "normal" captive born either, only known morphs. I'm not 100% sure on VA law, but that's how i remember it as close as a year or so ago...

He should know all this, and if he's reputable at all he'll have no problems answering any of these questions. He could be a real nice guy just trying to place some snakes, but not knowing the laws doesn't make the fines cheaper...

Thanks Chris, I've got an e-mail to him asking about this. I guess I'll see what he knows/has on permits and the legalities of this.
