Hey guys i was wondering if anyone keeps turtles here? I have a turtle question. I have a baby snake necked turtle and he is starting to get bigger and i was wondering what i should feed him. Right now i feed him brine shrimp but as he gets bigger he will be eating more, and i was wondering if there is anything else i could try to feed him. He wont eat turtle sticks like my red ears.

Pet stores sell a pellet type turtle food. If you feed only brine shrimp it can cause problems in the future. I only use shrimp as a treat every once in a while.

I am hoping to get an alligator snapping turtle soon. Right now I have a Reeves turtle and two Mississippi Map turtles. In the future I also plan on breeding box turtles. They are cool.

Whole food is great when you can get it.

Whole, small fish, and probably insects, are natural for them. If you get them to eat some kind of packaged, pelleted food, it seems like it would be a good idea to supplement with some whole, natural food when you can.

I feed mine crickets sometimes, but like I said, only as a treat. The pellets are what I have always fed my turtles when I had them, and they never showed signs of illness or malnutrition.

Snapping turtles are vicious things! They'll take a finger off if you aren't careful... if I had one I'd treat it like I would a venomous snake!

Yeah i usually feed my turtles pellets, but my snake necked turtle is a pretty strict carnivor and it is really hard to get them to eat pellets. Im not sure what to try, i cant just rely on fish or anything because if he doesnt catch any that day he wont eat or anything.

Yes they are. You need to be very careful, i am thinking about getting one maybe sometime in the future.

I have a different type of sideneck and you can feed your turtle feeder fish, worms and insects and occasionally a pinkie mouse as a treat. I also feed mine fresh shrimp, scallops and clams. Make sure not to over feed him, that can cause them to develop pyramiding in the shell and obesity.

If you feed only turtle pellets you can cause problems too. Most aquatic turtles need more fresh veggies and greens then pellets but pellets can still be given just not all the time. Commercial turtle foods should not be a staple food in their diet it should only be given occassionally.

I always keep live plants in my turtle tank. So, they get their fresh veggies, also, I keep guppies and feeder fish in the tank with them. When they catch one and eat it, there are usually 20 that have already taken its place.

The turtle is a little bit bigger then the size of a quarter. Also if im feed my turtles some feeder fish how many fish should i put in a tank at a time?

I put enough so that the turtle can eat his fill and the others can live until the turtle wants more, by then he has to exercise to get them, because they know their surroundings.

I'm not too sure about that one, I usually have my turtles converted to pellets soon after I get them, and use give them shrimp every once in a while as a treat.

Yeah well i tried to get him on pellets but he wont eat them. Their major carnivors and all he its is the shrimp. I gave him pellets one time and he would not even touch them.

It may take a little while for him to eat them. If his main food source of food was the shrimp it will only want the shrimp. It may take quite a bit of time before it will start to eat the pellets you give it... I would drop them in the tank at the same time you put a little bit of shrimp, that way the turtle may start to wean over to the new food stuffs.
