I don't remember the exact price, but I think it was somewhere around 90 cents per gallon for regular unleaded. That was 1986.
Here's a fun question..
What was the price of gas when you first started driving? (to everybody who wants to play..)
My first bought gallon of gas was .89/gallon. Leaded, lol.
This is a great point, but that means no traveling vacations through out the state. I am sure people will stay more at home and closer to town more than ever. Does that mean it will slow down tourism? I am sure its going to hurt all those small towns that depend on tourist taking the week end drive to their country hideaway. Or will this hurt more larger trips, i remember as a kid driving to Florida and going to Disney World. Sadly, If I drove down to Florida today, I would rather see fort tort or Rich's place. Man, just imagine all those racks.
*hint* Rich, turn your site into a Tourist Attraction. make some extra money.
I am sure your place is neater than those Rattlesnake Road side attraction Museums.![]()
Some good points. Your post illustrates just how far reaching the economic consequences will be. I think you're right that people won't travel as far or as often. But it might balance out some, as people who used to leave for vacation will visit closer destinations - perhaps some sort of cancelation effect: lose tourists from far away, gain some that live closer.
When the heck did you start driving??? I don't remember the cost when I first started 30 yrs ago, but I remember when I moved to So. IL/St Louis it was only .85 a gal and that was just in 2001.
I started driving in like 89 or 90.. My answer compared to some of yours was making me doubt my .89 answer. Then I looked it up- In just those years the price of leaded gas dropped alot because they were trying to get rid of it, legislation had just passed that would take it off the market in 91. Lucky timing for me and my 74 Nova..
Still though I'm seeing it was on average about 98 cents a gallon at that time, so my memory and the record have some discrepancy, lol. Maybe I've reversed the numbers?
You young pups make me chuckle.
It must be weird to realize that some of the organic matter that makes up current fossil fuel deposits was still alive when you started driving. :grin01: :sidestep:
I saw a program on TV the other night that talked about Hydrogen fuel and how people are afraid that it will explode. ummm.. has any ever stuck a match in a open gas can???
