Ultra Caramel/Ultra Amber Hatchlings???

HanneysCorn

This year I did a breeding of a Caramel, het hypo, ultra x Hypo, het ultra, caramel, anery. There are caramels in the clutch, but also some very odd looking normals...or are they normals? Now I've hatched amber babies last year, and caramels too, but these guys don't resemble either.

Since there is a possibility for both Ultra Caramels and Ultra Ambers in this clutch, I am searching for a breeder/breeders who have hatchling pictures of these morphs for comparision.

What has me baffled about these particular hatchlings is they do seem to have a touch of orange colouration between their saddles, yet their background colour is so light compared to normals. Even their saddles lack the darkness that normal hatchlings have.

I know I will see more after first shed, but these pictures were taken at 24 hours and before the initial blue phase, and I am curious. If you can help me out, it would be greatly appreciated...I'd love to see some ultra caramel and ultra amber hatchling pics if you have them.

Here a couple of the hatchlings just so you can see what I mean...

Hi Ruth,
I can't help you out with picture comparisons but from the information you have posted about them is that you wouldn't have any Normals in the clutch. With all the hets listed the least you would get is Hypos. Great looking babies. I would love to see pictures of them after their first shed. Maybe better coloration will be present to help identify them.

Lol Jay...I know normals aren't a possibility with these genetics. That's why the head scratching...what are they? When I work out all the possibilities I'm left with them being...exceptionally light caramels, very dark ambers, or OMG, could these possibly be Ultra Caramels or even Ultra Ambers.

Some folks would wonder how I know that Ultra is even in the mix. To make a long story short, the sire of this clutch for 3 years has been bred to either Amel or het amel females and produced Ultramels. The dam, is the daughter of the sire and last year also produced an Ultramel when bred to an Amber, het amel. So I know the gene is floating around on both sides...but did it meet and pair up in these hatchlings???

I know there's someone out there who's produced them; I'm just hoping they'll be kind enough to share a hatchling photo or two. I need an education on what Ultra Caramel or Ultra Ambers look like right out of the egg. I could be so off-based that it's laughable...but yes, I will post some pics after they shed.

I'm confused....

If the parents were a Caramel het hypo and ultra X Hypo het ultra, caramel and anery.....

Just how does that pairing have the possibility of NOT producing normals? Disregarding the hets, caramel x hypo will give you normals---so the chance for producing normals IS there.

Quite frankly, I see red on those snakes just behind the head. Caramels don't have reds, nor do ambers. So, I suppose if it has red it cannot be a caramel based morph---so you're left with them being normals or hypos (either strain).

The Grand Bubble Burster does it again! :D But Joe is absolutely correct. Even the odds favor them as being normals or hypos (either type). Give them a shed or two and compare them to all the other hatchlings in the clutch. I find that really helps in identifying oddballs. I'm favoring them as being hypos myself.

Joe...you are correct. Yes normals are a possibility and yes there is a touch of orange on these babies as I mentioned in my first post. That's why I'm asking the questions...but these hatchlings don't look like normals I have hatched from my other projects over the years and I've hatched lots of normals.

I've hatched my share of hypos as well; both the parents have produced hypos in the past from separate breedings. Those hypos have always been easily identifiable in the clutch.

And you say you're confused...me too! Maybe they are just odd hypos. Only time, sheds, and eventual breeding trials...once again...can really be the real marker in this all. It took 3 years to eventually prove that Ramses, the male was het ultra when the 'black eyed amels' kept showing up in clutches he sired with amel or het amel females, so what's another 6 or 7 for these guys to mature and be test bred to several females over a few breeding seasons.

Guess I was just hoping someone could say...Nope, those definitely aren't Ultra Caramel or Ultra Amber hatchlings because here's what they should look like. That would save me 'keeper' space and I wouldn't have any doubts that I 'let go' of something I should have kept... :D...been there, done that, before.

Gotta love this hobby! This breeding season seems to be presenting more questions than answers. Ah, the joys of corn genetics...always puzzles to solve, piece by piece. Sure provides the motivation to hold our interest.

Ultra Caramel

Here is a picture of a hatchling from last year that came from an Ultramel x Caramel het Amel. I assume is is a Ultramel het caramel. Talk about the caramel showing up in hets. I admit that it could be an Amber Ultramel because the utramel (possibly het caramel)and the caramel may be het for hypo A.

There is no doubt in my mind that your Ultramel is het for Caramel......
