Unsure About Morph

Owned by Paisley
When I first got Paisley, multiple people on the forum agreed that she was an ultramel. HOWEVER, some things lately have caused me to question it. She is changing color for sure. When I first got her, her belly was a pale pink with maroon checkers. Now her belly is STARK WHITE with brown checkers! Also, I've begun to notice what looks like black borders around her saddles. Originally her pupils were red, but now they appear to be black. I looked on iansvivarium.com and the ultramel eye pic had a black pupil. Putting it simply, I am very confused lol. So, after her shed, I took pics of her in shaded sunlight, so they are VERY true to her colors. Probably the best pictures I've taken of her yet. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

A pic of her "black" borders that confuse me.

Her new belly colors.

Side view.

Clearly, she decided to flash me.

Eye Pic...Is the pupil red or black? I can't tell anymore.

Excuse my face, she looked so cute. Terrible lighting, but she's smiling :)

Sorry about all the pictures...Thanks for looking!

Those purple-y tones actually make me wonder about lava.... It also has the areas of darker/near black pigment that a lot of lavas have.

With looking at more ultramel pictures though, they can get those tones as well. So probably an ultramel still.

I thought lava at that first pic simply because her borders look the exact shade of my lava but shades vary sooooo much within each morph. The ultramels I keep seeing look orangey but mine and several I saw for sale recently were very much the red.

Thanks all. I'm happy to stick with ultramel. I just can't even believe how much her colors have changed in the short time since I got her. I think she'll be a very pretty, deep red when she's older :)

Very ultramel, Shelby. And from hatchling to adult...watching any morph change is a thing to make one marvel.

Many have described the visual of those ultramel saddle border markings as what melted dripped candle wax would look like as it dries if dripped onto a non-light-color surface.

Ultramel is one of my favorite combinations, and the pupil can be so deeply ruby-colored...that it looks black. And iris can vary greatly, too, from very light to what would be virtually normal for the morph at hand.

The _only_ (based on your photos) other thing she could _possibly_ be is homozygous for ultra. But she looks too bright and the reds and oranges too vivid, for that, in my humble opinion. I don't mean to add new doubt or alarm, because both parents would HAVE to be ultramel for that to be even possible. (Or a homo-ultra parent and an ultramel parent.)
I looked back at your previous pics of her, and do indeed believe (amel is present and) she is ultramel.

Unfortunately, I will never be able to see or know of her parents :( The only record Petco actually kept for their snakes were feeding records. I feel like I managed to snag her for a great price ($25) for what she is. Most of the other corns they had were normals, and I don't think they cared what specific morph she was. None of the morphs were listed.
Anyway, I'm happy to call her an ultramel. I really do love watching her colors change. I cannot wait to see her as an adult.
ALSO, vetusvates, the other day in my philosophy class we learned the word "anthropomorphism." :D I'm sure the look on my face when the professor said it was priceless.

Rofl.

In the summer of 2011, I think, I was in New Orleans for a conference...and just hadddd to stop at a Petco I drove by. There was a whitish snake in with the ones labeled as snow that was definitely not snow. Too pinkish or too orange. Opal-ish? Who knows. The herp person was of no help.

Oh I know that feeling of "I HAVE TO LOOK IN PETCO." Too often. They never correctly label the corns. Petsmart included. They'll have a tank that says "Corn Snakes" that contains normals and "red" corn snakes of various red morphs. I don't think they'd care too much if they accidentally sold something worth a lot of money. Sometimes they also have a tank labelled "Fancy Corn Snakes." That one always contains the white morphs. There's no rhyme or reason, just label them by color. I didn't question it too much when I first got Paisley, but now when I visit Petco I can't help but see if they have anything a bit unique. I don't "need" another snake, but I think we all know how that works.... Lol
