I'm currently watching my male amel, and he came out of his hide to start shedding. He's rubbing his nose against everything in sight, which I know is normal, but what I'm not sure is normal is that it looks like a section of skin by his tail area has already split open. I have never seen this before, and though it doesn't look like it's "bad" I'm not sure that it's normal. The only difference right now is that I changed his aspen out and I'm now trying him on a cocanut fiber bedding. The area in question is right along the sied where the scootes and scales meet, and only spans an area of about 4 scales. I'll let you know if the skin comes off weird.

I can't imagine that it will cause any problems...
I have had snakes shedding and split halfway down one side before pulling it off their heads...and they had no problems getting it off...

Ok. Just making sure. The area in question has started coming off and the scootes from the old skin has been removed, and he still hasn't gotten his nose free. This is so fun to watch.

ditto that

Also, I've had snakes shed in so many pieces it looked like shredded paper in a fairly humid cage. Unusual, but sheds can be a funny thing. I have a black milk that never in three years has shed in one piece. :nope:

I switched to the cocanut fiber to help increase the humidity in the tank because this male is notorios for having dry spots when he sheds, and so he has a difficult time shedding. He also like rubbing his nose agianst the glass when there's a rock right in front of him. I think he needs glasses.

I have some that will use JUST the aspen and get the shed off fine...I have others that absolutely DESTROY their enclosure...all the furniture is moved around...water dish spilled...aspen in big piles with glass showing in between...shed wrapped around EVERYTHING in almost impossible ways...

It IS pretty fun to watch...if they'll let you.

Well, everything seems to have gone alright. Asside from the hole in the area that his "side split" everything came off in one piece. He's nice and bright and orange. I'll post pics in a few hours. He looks tired right now.

My adult did the same, about half way down her body it split, then her "head" came off and she did a perfect shed.

This will probably be the last time I put pics of my snakes on the forums. From now on, I'll be putting them on my online photo albums, simply because the pictures I take are large with maximum resolution, and take up a lot of space. Here's the link to my photo album, there will be more pictures of him there. http://community.webshots.com/user/egguttata

Why not just link a clickable thumb???

That way you can still share...and not take up the space...

That is how I usually post pics...I take large pics...the quality is better for printing...I just post a clickable thumbnail...

Truthfully, I've never thought about clickable thumbs, and I don't know how to do them. I just thought that the photo album would be easiest.

Photo albums are nice...but not if you want to include a picture relevant to a conversation...

I use Imageshack to post my pics.

http://www.imageshack.us/index.php

You just click browse...and browse your computer for the pic you want to use, click on it...and hit the upload button...

It takes a few seconds (or longer depending on traffic and connection speed) and the page will refresh with a BUNCH of links...
Find the one that says "Clickable Thumb posted to a forum or message board"...copy the link and paste it into your post...

Go to the thread http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18037 to see what they look like and how they work...

My pics are always so big I am reluctant to post the original to a thread...I use the thumbnails...so if someone is interested they can click it to see the BIG pic.
