Updated GTP hatchlings at 6 months

22 is not enough snakes
I haven't taken many photos of the snakes lately, but I had the week off and decided to get the camera out today. These guys are ~6-7 months old. The red is my favorite one of the dozen or so we have left from two clutches and one I would consider holding back.

They can be a little bitey but it's not worse than a corn bite at this age. Over all I think this species gets a really bad reputation that it doesn't deserve. I work with somewhere around 30 of these and there is only one I will use heavy gloves with.

Those are beautiful! And I do admit that one of the reasons I never considered one was that I thought they were mean.

Nice babies. I'm waiting on my girls to drop eggs. Pretty sure I had follicles on my one, waiting to see ovulation. I'm going to move the male out since it appears they are not interested in each other any more.

Stormy - a lot of people are under that impression, which is the reason why we take some of our adults to shows with us so that people can handle them. They're really not that much different than handling a corn (except in the case of my corns, the green trees don't crap on me every time I get them out).

Meg - That's a good sign! Did you intend for them to lay this late in the year or did it just work out that way?

:roflmao:

Do the red ones keep their color as they get older?

There is a person locally who brings one to lots of the shows. He is the sweetest thing!

The babies are looking wonderful! I wish the red ones stayed that color, though.

Jeff,
These guys can breed any time of year as long as you cycle them and so I decided to put mine together and try it out. There's been plenty of copulation except with my biak girl. I've had 3 different males with her and Tre is the only one that hasn't had her staying on the bottom of the cage for a week. No copulation, but at least she's moving around in there. I'm raising the temps back up now and I'll remove all the males. I may cycle the biak again at some point and try again with her. She's the one I really wanted to breed in the first place!
Stormy: I'll answer for T. Bill since I'm already writing here. No, the red ones turn green as well, although red is known for some of the more amazing colors like blue.Depending upon the parents, his red one will most likely turn green with blue markings like most.
As far as handling, not all Green trees are handleable. My biak girl is pure wicked and it also stresses her out very much when you handle her. She will ground herself for several days afterward. My Sorongs are all dog tame and anyone can hold them. My Aru girl is pretty good. My Aru male is so-so but has bitten the crap out of my husband while I was holding him. My Jayapura is tame. My OS male is wicked as is my tri-color male.I wouldn't say that they are all tame snakes or that even if you can handle them, that they tolerate it as well as a cornsnake. Fuego never bites, but she will ground herself for days after you take her out. This tells me she's excessively stressed. I would never have people hold her on display. Tempest yes. She's the most laid back snake ever!
