upsizing the meal....

I am going to start upgrading my babies food to the fuzzies next week. I was watching their bellies when they eat and not noticing much of a bump anymore. They are getting longer but not packing on the weight as fast as much as I thought they would by now. I checked with the snake breeder I buy from and he said start feeding them the small fuzzies and they will really start growing. It made me feel good that even being new my instincts were correct. I do alot of researching but what really helped was I actually got to meet the breeder in person and I was able to directly ask any questions I had. Again, being new to the hobby I want to take proper care of my scale babies so they are happy and healthy...as well as making sure I stay a happy snake mama too! Thanks again for having this forum. It has been great and a tremendous help

I am really lucky to have the breeder that provided both of our corns. She has been utterly amazing. I know a lot of folks have great experiences with mail order but I really think that having her be local made it a lot easier for us to get started on the right foot. It sounds like you have an awesome breeder as well.

New, just out of curiosity, do you know how long your snake is and how much it weighs? Just curious, because I thought Cruella was ready maybe a week or two ago, but am hesitant judging by the center of her body (girth) and the size of the fuzzies I bought. So for now, I have stuck to, two pinks per meal going on the fifth week of doing so. She hoovers them down before I can really even watch, just don't want her injuring herself or dislocating her jaw or something trying to get the larger meal down.

I guess it's all about trial and error, but I am going to revisit at her first six months feeding with is slated for around October 30th. Play it by ear I guess. No need to rush if you're not comfortable.

Glad it is working out for you. Let me know how the transition goes. On a side note (not to hijack), anyone know where I can get a good snake scale and how to really accurately measure a corn? I feel bad trying to stretch either out and put them next to a tape measurer, haha.

My snake Petri is 21" long and weighs 33gm and he is on small fuzzies. He is over a year old though...

Based on what I told my breeder, he told me to go ahead and bump up to small fuzzies. I am going to attempt it as I said, next week. I trust my breeder completely . He is absoultely wonderful. as far as a scale goes, I am assuming you can find them online. I dont have one, but I am considering it. I am not planning on breeding mind you, but may pick one up just to have so I am assured that they are proper weight. Good luck on finding the scle...keep me posted and let me know where you found one. I will update and report how the first fuzzie feeding goes.

You'd be surprised how much their mouths can open! I switched my yearling from two fuzzies to (1) hopper not long ago, and I was worried she'd have troubles... as she couldn't seem to figure out how to get the thing in her mouth. But, it really only took her a minute. I think it was me who had the most trouble because she didn't eat it as quickly as she normally would.
I followed the Munsion feeding chart (sort of, Syd should have already been eating hoppers when I got her but wasn't - according to the chart). But it's been very helpful and she has gained weight like CRAZY since upping her diet (not unhealthily, mind you). I definitely urge you to take a look at that. You can search the feeding chart on this forum or on Google/a search engine.

:)

thank you. I am excited and nervous. I am sure they will start bulking up as soon as I begin giving them fuzzies. I will look up the Munsion feeding chart. Its very exciting to watch them grow up

Sure!

I literally just typed in "Munson feeding plan" in Google and a bunch of links came up. That is a prettier version of the one I used. But same thing. I think there are a few threads on this forum that disguss this chart. It is approximate and different for every snake, mind you, but I use it as a general guideline.

:)

I did a Google search and it came up for me. Seemed very useful as you stated for a general guideline as far as feeding. Thanks for the information.

I've used the Munson plan as a guide, but haven't stuck to it strictly. Always use your judgement and judge by your snake's size. If you don't think they're large enough to be moved up to the nex size prey, wait until you're sure. Severus took his first hopper at 83 grams. He was eating 2 peach fuzzies for a while before that. Better to play it safe than to give them something a chart says they are ready for when they may not be.
