How can I control the temperature of my vivarium?
I have a large exo terra desert heatmat which is positioned on the base like so:

My thermometre shows a consistant reading of 20C/70F and I know form my research that a corn snake vivarium needs to be 75F-80F

The thermometre is stuck underneath the glass base and the thermometre is stuck 1 or 2 inches above it.

The glass where the heat mat is stuck is plenty hot enough, i dont understand it.

I would just like to add, dont bother telling me to search, I have been told, I have looked for hours and I cant find what I am looking for and it would take just as much time for you to tell me what I can do

That stick-on thermometer will not be giving you an accurate reading of the temperature directly above the heatmat, you need a digital in/out thermometer in order to know what the temps really are. If you had searched the basic set-up and husbandry links before getting your snake you would have known :rolleyes: I wouldn't be surprised if your viv temperature is higher than the air temperature that the stick-on shows

I dont have my snake yet :twoguns: I was just making sure everything was ok before I am buying one
 
Okey dokey! good for you, you are in that case 100% better than most new snake owners, including myself when I started. If there isn't a Maplins near you that stocks it, you can get them to order it or get it from their website. I also started off with the stick-on thermometers, and was so irritated to find what a waste of time it was!

Those images are HUGE! Why didn't you resize them? Also, like diamondlil said, dial thermometers don't give you an accurate reading. You need a digital thermometer with one of those wires with a probe on the end of it that's directly on the glass where the heat pad is. That will give you an accurate reading. If you have no thermostat/rheostat controlling the heat pad, it will be way too hot.
 
ok, maybe I was hasty there. I would link you to Maplins but am useless unless one of my teenage boys does it for me. try the product search function, or just go to your nearest branch when you get a chance. The staff there can order it for you off their site, with no postage cost. The set up looks good for a hatchling, but maybe not enough floor space for an adult corn?
 
Yes im sorry about that it didnt come out as it intended to, but i cannot find an edit button I was going to change it, so if anyone else is upset by it, I am deeply sorry and dint mean to offend, but in all honesty I have searched for hours, and I am loving this site by the way. But thank you for helping me anyway, it is much appreciated even though I upset you

Ok i will definatly look into buying a digital thermo with a probe thanks for all your help guys and once again sorry for upsetting you, it is the last thing I want is to get on the wrong side of people a day after I joined.
 
Only contributing (paying) members can edit their posts, the rest of us mortals have to try to think before we send! If you try the maplins site and can't find the product, your nearest branch will do it for you, and as I said before, that way there's no postage charge, which is better if the Maplins is near you. To re-size pictures (because a lot of members have dial-up, and it just makes the posts look better) I just stretch/skew to 25% in paint any pictures I want to post, and label them with an 'a' in my files so I don't post the wrong ones. I'll show you the difference.

Are you getting an anery a? I have 2 of those, but that picture is my granite (anery/blood). Not that anything other than that personal 'wow' is what matters, my very plain brown and grey anery is the house favorite, because he's so mellow to handle. He's got no fancy bloodlines, no special looks, but he's the one my friends and family always want to hold. (Even my mum has to see him!)

hey, congrats on getting your new snake! when are you bringing it home?

a digital thermometer is definately a must have!!! i got mine at wallmart, but i'm sure you can get one many places. i have one that's used for cooking food etc and it works fine. i find that things sold in a lot of pet stores are overpriced, but that could be where i am. hehe.
as for your set up, it's good, for a baby snake. i took a look at the exact same tank when i got my oakeetee, and i really didn't like it. the door is kinda neat in that it allows for easy access, but it just isn't big enough, and i found the doors wayyyyy to flimsy. it actually broke while i was in the store!!! i like the background on it, but i think it's more worth your money to get a cheap fish tank type viv and get a really good tight top for it. as for now, the one you have will work. just make sure the doors stay on!!!

That thermometer measures ambient air temperature, useless to you concerning snakes.you need the substrates temperature, and therefore need a thermometer with a probe. I didnt check where you lived... but if you live in the UK you can order it from HERE

To control the temperature, use a thermostat. A good one to use would be Habistats Matstat, HERE

Im not to sure about the position of the Heatmat, it seems to cover too much of the tank, maybe if it was put the other way around? so it covered half the tank?

Agreed that these huge pics and large page that needs a scroll are annoying.
Anyways, could you put your heatmat the other way round so that it is half and half? I'm sure that would be better and give more of a temp gradient. I'd also advise to get a thermostat ASWELL as a decent thermometer as this will control your max temp for you.
 
yeap im gonna get them, thanks for the links stuart I think I will get them as they arn't too expensive. Pics of my corn will come soon. I have just been handling it and my god I didnt realize that they had such good grip even this little one. OMG its soooo cute :crazy02:
