Using the UTH w/out attaching

My concern with the UTH is that if I want to move up to a new enclosure I have to buy a bigger heating mat, if you place it on the enclousure and then take it off it voids the warranty and claims that it might damage the wiring.
So how do you do that without having to buy a new one for each tank, do you attach it to something else first?
 
I personally never attach the adhesive side of my heat mats to the enclosures. I stick them on a peice of ceramic tile or something else that can handle 120 degrees of heat on a regular basis and then I put that under the tank. Attaching them just causes a mess eventually in my opinion.
 
So you just lay the peice of tile down on your whatever it is, put the heating pad on top of it, and then the tank ontop of that?
 
Yes, That is it! The reason for the tile is to absorb the heat from whatever surface the tank is to be sitting on.

Where did you get the tile if you don't mind my asking?
 
Some people don't attach them to anything. I'm still waivering about the UTHs for the new cages. They don't lay flat, because of the cord attachment- so I have to build up the cages 1/4 inch. I also want to be able to pivot the cage stack on the counter, so I'm thinking of putting those furniture moving discs under the bottom cage. My new UTHs don't even have adhesive- the manufacturer of the cage said to tape them to the plastic cage bottom with aluminum tape. I was also thinking of attaching to a floor tile, though...But they will be nowhere near 120- they'll be on a thermostat.

Well true, it should never get up to 120, I think its just for saftey measures yes?
I still don't think I would want the bureau at a constant 85* anyway though, hehe.
 
I would really REALLY suggest you get a thermostat. I think all UTH should be controlled by a thermostat IMO due to the safety of the animal. And as for a new UTH, just go with flexwatt. It's the easiest IMO and it can be cut to whatever length you want (as long as its longer than 1 ft). Thermostats pay off in the end and you don't need to worry so much so I suggest you invest in a t-stat asap.

I'm guessing that if you went to some sort of hardware store or home improvement store, they might sell you an extra tile for cheap, or possibly even give you a badly chipped one (that they can't use) for free.
 
Well I work right next to Lowe's so I could go over there on my break and ask them, guess they'd be more likely to give me stuff if I was wearing my shirt from work :rolleyes:
