Uth and thermostat

Okay, guys. I now have both corns on Uth, and I purchased the Hydrofarm thermostat. How does this thing work?

I know the probe is supposed to go in the Viv under the substrate (aspen at this point), but my locking screen on top won't close with the cord in the way. So for now I have it between the Uth and the Viv bottom. I know it's not correct, but I don't want to risk burning my beautiful Miami Normal.

My Snow has a Uth right now, but she is at school for the weekend. I have several layers of newspapers on the bottom of her Viv to keep her from coming in direct contact with the hot glass on the bottom of her Viv. I need to know how to get the thermostat on correctly so I can get her set up tomorrow when I return to school.

Help, please!

You might have to drill a hole in the top or something. Autoparts stores should sell rubber grommets you can use to plug the hole around the wire.

I have my thermostat UNDER the UTH and it works fine. I just had to get the dial set right (i.e. because of it being under the UTH the thermostat is set at 83 to get it around 87).

Thank you for your reply. I noticed during lunch today that the probe of the thermostat was preventing a good seal between the uth and the glass bottom of the Viv. So I put it on the bottom side of the Uth. Better now.

Glad I could help! :D

Just remember that the UTH will ve a few (as much as 8 from personal experience) cooler on the bottom than the top so its important you have a way of knowing what the temp is inside the viv where the UTH is so you can adjust for that difference.

Understood. I will adjust accordingly.

I gave Brownie a hide made out of a Kleenex box and a green leafy fake plant. She is all kinds of happy now. :D

some sliding screen lids have a small notch in the back that you can punch out for cords. If not (a few of mind don't) I managed to drill a hole in the plastic near where the lid slides through. You might have to get creative.

I have my viv on a beach towel and put the probe on top of the towel, under the viv. I figure the reading has to be pretty close to if the probe were in the viv instead, am I right? The towel holds the probe in place.

I would be worried about overheating that way, I think. I know the uth instructions say that the viv needs to be raised slightly so it doesn't sit directly on the cord, and reviews say the viv should be raised to allow circulation to prevent overheating. I have mine up on rubber feet.

As long as its on a thermostat it shouldnt get anywhere near hot enough to be a concern...unless the thermostat fails open loop style...but even then I dont think these UTH's can do much damage. The hottest I have ever seen was like 120°f which is hot, but not fire hot.

I see. I agree in that case. Didn't think of it that way.

Thankyou!

Yes, it is on a thermostat and pretty accurate to the temp. I never thought of putting the wire IN the tank, and the directions say for a glass aquarium to put it under I was pretty sure of myself until this post. Thanks for the confirmation!
