UTH for 20L, which one please

I'm so addicted to....
I think I read on here somewhere that a UTH rated for a 30-40 gallon tank is what I should use for a 20L, is that correct?
Should I not go for the UTH that is rated for the 10-20g.

You're going to want to heat about 1/3 of the tank with the UTH. The "rating" the company assigns is not so important, as even the smallest typically get very hot and need a thermostat to regulate them.

I was just trying to get my hands around understanding why I thought I read the bigger size for the 20L. I guess maybe it would be because the tank is longer and needs the bigger size UTH to cover more of the length? I guess that makes sense.

That would likely be why, although to be real honest with you, what the really need is a "hot spot". I was told by the members on here just to provide a reasonably sized area with heat for digestion, because my adult male is in a large tub and I would need a huge (and expensive!) UTH to cover 1/3-1/2 of it. He has a heated corner with a hide, and I've had no health/digestion problems with him whatsoever.
 
I have a 20L and I use a Exo Terra medium sized UTH. It measures 10"x11" which is almost exactly 1/3 of the floorspace of the tank.
 
I use the small UTH's 10-20 gal size because if my thermostat or pad malfunction they can still easily get away from the extra heat. Breeders usually have 2 inches of heat tape running across the back of their racks so that 10-20 gal size is about the same anyway.
 
Go to Reptile Basics and buy 1 foot of 11" heat tape with wiring and clips set. Then get yourself a Johnson or Rhino thermostat (or better if you'd like to throw the money down for it) and have Rich do all the wiring for you. He does a great job and backs all of his stuff up. Never had a problem with his stuff and would recommend it to anybody. Going with heat tape and a thermostat is really the best, most efficient, and safest way for UTH. If you're planning on breeding a lot of people don't like UTH because it can sterilize males so keep that in mind. I've never had a problem and I'm not sure what the OP has in mind, but this would be my suggestion and probably the suggestion of most on this forum. Beyond this stuff all you need is some aluminum tape ($4.00 @ Wal-Mart) and you're good to go! Hope that helps
