UTH Problems

Ultratherms claim to get up to only 95F, so I still have mine on thermostats. 95F won't melt plastic.

This is how I attached mine. Those Super Sliders are what Jake's (lower) cage sits on, on the kitchen counter, so I can slide the stack around if I want.

That's the bottom of some custom cages I have. Each has it's own UTH, and own thermostat probe if I want to change, seasonally, which mat the thermostat controls. Because of heat rising, and the bottom cage having a mat under _and_ over it. In real life, not a concern...

Thanks Nanci, I am a visual person so the picture is perfect...much appreciated.

I have heard of people attatching the UTHs to the glass from a picture frame but I do not know personally if that type of glass would crack?

I have Ultratherm heat mats and all of them are on thermostats, but I ran a little experiment today on a tank with no critters in it. I turned the heat mat on without running the mat through a stat, after seeing Nanci's post, #21, that they claim their heatmats only reach 95*F (I've seen that claim by Ultratherm on the Bean Farm site too). Within an hour the temperature on the floor of the glass tank, under 1 inch of beechwood chip substrate hit 115*F.

So I would recommend everyone always use a thermostat or rheostat, no matter what heat mat is being used :)

What kind of thermostat do you use, Susie? I've been thinking of upgrading my lamp dimmer to a thermostat, because even with A/C, when it turns on and off the temperature fluctuates.

Herpstat!!! They had a sale at Thansgiving last year, maybe they do on other holidays, too! I get the second cheapest one, because it has high/low alarms. I have one of the basic ones, too, that works just fine. But lots of the Night Drop model. I don't use night drop, but it has some nice features the basic model doesn't have.

I use the brand "Habistat" for my thermostats, dimmer stats and pulse proportional stats, not sure if they sell them in the US though :shrugs: I'd go with Nanci's recommendations, as she's got a better feel for what's available over there :)
