UTH question

22 is not enough snakes
I have a Reptitherm heater for my 10g aquarium. It's not attached yet, but I'm reading the instructions for it and it brought up something I've never even read about on here. It says that if the viv is setting on a solid surface, the heater should be put on the side or back of the aquarium. Will that still work ok for snakes? I always thought it had to be on the bottom to help with digestion by warming the stomach.

Also, it says that newspaper or turf can't be used with it because it will be too hot and burn the snake. I couldn't find any suitable bedding anywhere over the weekend so I was going to use one of those until I can find aspen or something else. What do people use to heat the viv if they use newspaper as substrate?

what i did for my son's 10 g tank. was get a 1 inch x 1 inch pine board and cut it to length of the sides of the tank. that raises the tank off its stand, desk, whatever it's on. ( and can be attached to the bottom) they want to have an airflow between the tank and stand. thats why they say to attach to back or side. but make sure you use a rheostat of some sort. other wise it will run at full blast. you want to be able to control the heat.

Okay, so the spacing shouldn't be a problem for me mounting it on the bottom. Any thoughts on the substrate question? I'm hoping to get this mounted tonight so I can see how warm it is in the morning and I'll be able to know more of what I'm dealing with as far as temps right against the glass.
