Is it ok to have a uth in a wooden viv with only the substrate on top or do i need something to cover it.

As posted in your other thread..........

Very ill advised. The snake will burrow under the substrate and be in direct contact with the heat mat, which will almost certainly cause burns. Obviously you can use a thermostat to regulate the temperature but this is still dangerous.

I notice in your first post you say you haven't yet bought the wooden viv, so if doing what you need to do (Maize gave you some good suggestions) is too much work, then just get a different one!

Its not too much work, just trying to get things right. Will try and find some pics on here to get some ideas

I would bet if you got a 12 x 12 ceramic tile from Home Depot and laid it on top of the uth you would be ok. That would help to distribute the heat and would keep the snake from getting under it.

Thanks Wade, Will have to get a few tiles, my heat mat is 17 by 11. Would i need to put tape between the tiles and if so what sort of tape is safe to use

btw Tracee I am asking this because i want to do the right thing for the snakes. I was given the totally wrong advice when i bought the snakes. Everything they told me seems to be the complete opposite to what i am being told on here. I would rather ask loads of questions on here and look an idiot than do something wrong and harm my corns.

I wouldn't recommend using tape inside the viv. The edges will inevitably lift and you'll end up with it stuck on the snake - ungluing them can be very unpleasant for all concerned. I just lay the tiles over the top of the mat, loose. Their weight keeps them in place.

If you're worried about them being moved (if your snakes show a particular preference for burrowing), then try using Blu-Tak to keep them in place. That won't stick to the snakes.

Of course! I just thought it sounded in the other thread that you were hoping someone could suggest something easier than modifying a wooden viv. You're in the right place to ask questions anyway, pet shops ironically are often the worst place to seek advice. Glad you found the forum!

I agree that tape is a problem. I don’t know why but tapes sticks better to snakes than anything else. Don’t put tape inside the viv anywhere.

Try to find some ceramic tiles or pavers that are heavy enough to stay in place on their own. I think you will be fine. Most wooden cages are heated with the heat element inside the cage.

Ask lots of questions. Interesting thought. Most people in pet stores are there because they needed a job. Maybe they liked dogs or cats or had fish as a kid. They don’t necessarily know anything about snakes. The people on this forum are here because they like snakes. You’ll get better information here.

Thanks for the advice. No tape then just heavy tiles. It was a reptile shop that i got the snakes from but wont be going back again, have to find somewhere else to go. I wasn`t looking for an easier option Tracee just the right one. I was told just put the uth in and nothing else is needed apart from a stat. As i was only expecting to buy 1 viv etc now i will have to get 2 of everything, which has to be done but i wasnt expecting that. Thanks for the advice everyone

As long as they're selling healthy animals and conditions are good, then it's just a matter of using your judgement with them. You don't have to boycott them, just remember to take any advice they give with a pinch of salt until you can confirm/deny it elsewhere.

Kinda like the rest of life!
