UTH's- Basic Question

Sooo... I live in Houston, where heat and humidity rule the environment. I don't typically use UTH's during this part of the year as my house never drops below 75 at night and rarely goes past 85 during the day (good for my electricity bill AND my snakes...). However, I like to plan things ahead and I got to thinking about winter this year. When Houston's "winter" rolls around, it can get cold and since I enjoy it, I often leave the central heat off or set to turn on very rarely.

Now, I've used UTH's every winter/cool period since I've had snakes. And every season, I have to buy a new one because the ZooMed brand heaters just don't seem to last around here. In saying that, I've only gone through two, but I have to admit that I don't care much for a brand that's let me down twice in a row.

Does anyone have any suggestions about other brands (I don't even know if there are any)? I have more snakes to heat this winter than in past years, so I would like to get my hands on products that will function longer.

Thanks!

There's quite a few brands of UTH out there depending on the store or if you're looking online. There's Ultratherm, Reptitherm, Exo Terra, T-Rex and I'm sure lots of others. I can't remember hearing much of anyone having such a problem where they only last a year. The UTH I'm using right now is one I bought 4 or 5 years ago as the only brand my local store sold and it still runs great. Maybe you're just having bad luck?
Are you using something to control the amount of heat? If it's just plugged in and allowed to heat to max temp that could be a cause for why it's not lasting a long time :shrugs:

Hi I dont know if you can get them in the states but Habistat and Komodo are good makes. I Have them both and they are very good.

I like my Dragons Lair UTHs way better than the ZooMed one I have. Big Apple Herp is the only place that carries them. The only problem I had with them is that Big Apple was back ordered on the size I needed for like 3 months, so I had to wait to get them. However I sent them an email asking when they would have more of that size & they replied right away, then sent me another email letting me know when they had gotten them in. Because of the shipping you really need to order at least two to make the price of them comparable to the ZooMed ones, at least at the prices around here, but if you need a lot of them, they are actually a little less than the ZooMed.

Well personally I don't have any other brands to recommend I just wanted to say on my own behalf it's odd that you've had such lousy experience with the Zoomed UTH I've used them on about 6 or 7 enclosures now and I've been using them continuously since spring of '07 without any issues. Go figure.
