I got my corn about 5 years ago but gave her to a friend about 2 years ago. He recently got married and his new wife said "Me or the snake". He gave her back (the corn that is :)) When I first got her back she was very docile and slow moving as usual. In the past week and a half she has gotten more and more active. She seems to be trying to get out of her viv, crawls quickly through my hands when I am holding her, and is jumpy when being handled. She has never bitten me. Her temp in the viv is upper 70s. She is burying herself in her crushed walnut base as well. Her behavior is not problematic but the only time I have ever seen a drastic behavior change with her, something has been going on. She just had a clean shed so that is not the issue. Any ideas? :dancer:
 
Oh my gosh! I just logged in to post the same thing!!!!!

I got Spike about a year ago and he's always been quiet and was out and about between 8-10p, every night, except in blue he'd stay hidden for a few days. The past two weeks he is ALL OVER THE PLACE. All day long, no less! He is eating fine, 1 mouse per week, temps are good, and like yours, has never been aggressive.

I was thinking it had to do with the fact that he needs a bit bigger aquarium (He currently resides in a 10 gallon aquarium, but he is NOT a big yearling and is only on fuzzies. He is however, ready for a bigger house which is in the plans for this weekend.)

What is going on with these guys?

And I can't even begin to tell you how many times my kids have said, "Mom, he's trying to get out!!!!". And he never used to do this.....:)
 
I can't tell you why they do this. I seem to think that some times they just want to be more active or they are just hungrey. Most of mine do this kind of crazy wanting to get out behavior before they lay eggs. I have one doing it right now. She has been doing it for the last few days. I am going to feed her and see if that helps. This is about the time of year that their food intake increases before brumation so it may just be natural insticts kicking in. However, it is not tank size. Your tank might need to be increased in size but my snakes live in mansions. We have dedicated our house to all of our snakes. It is really retarded that I have my house filled with huge tanks when they could be fine in a 20 or 30 gal but it makes my husband happy so what the heck but this snake's home is a 100 gal tank. So I really don't think that it is because of size.
 
It just may be time to get her a bigger home. The other owner may not have held her enough so she isn't as accustomed to your hands.
 
I have had my 08 amel since Jan or Feb of 09 so I know how my guy usually is and for the first time ever he bit me! I was setting up for feeding, had not even touched feeders yet, just getting everyone weighed (now that I have a scale again) and in their feed bins. He bit me, my 09 amel mot het caramel stripe whom I have had since just a few months old bit me 2 times, my 09 ghost who I got a month before my amel mot girl bit me, my normal stripe I just got bit me, and my 2010 normal I hatched out bit me 2-3 times. Its crazy! Never had a hand attack like this before. If it is the season that their appetites pickup maybe my non-feeders will start eating, I do not care if THEY bite me as long as they eat. I am waiting til the kids are asleep and it is dark to feed the last two as they are giving me such problems eating. They are also ones I hatched this year.
 
Eeek. First thing's first the temparature (in the warmest place on the warm side) should be mid 80s.

However, if you're using a stick-on thermometer to measure temperature, then the temps inside the viv could in fact be much much higher than this. And as well as being very dangerous, too high temps can cause increased activity.

If your temps are ok, there is no need to worry. Thorough exploration is absolutely normal and the very reason why vivs have to be so secure - corns are amazing escapologists!


P.S. for wholovessnakes, it's the wrong time of year, but when this sort of thing happens again and he refuses food, it will be 'spring fever'. It always catches new owners off guard the first time :)
 
P.P.S. Pretty sure it won't be due to the size of the viv. It could be due to having too few places to hide, so ensure there are lots of hides/toilet rolls/cardboard boxes and substrate to burrow in :)
