Visual comparison sexing help please.

Hi, I know that popping is more accurate. But my "seasoned herp friend" is unavailable tommorow, and I have to try my best to sex a corn tommorow. While I have seen my friend pop a snake, I hadn't yet been shown how to do it myself, and not wanting to hurt the snakes, I want to at least get a better chance of getting it right by visual inspection.

It is a normal phase corn, will candling with a flashlight work at all?

Also, if I were to compare tail length, how would I do it? I know males have longer tails but does anyone have any comparison pics I can see so I have a visual reference please?

Again, I know it isn't very accurate but still better than pure guessing. Please help.

Visual comparison only works with adults, really...
Sometimes you can candle snows and butters, and other light amelanistics. Never heard of it working with normal corns.

Get a copy of Bill & Kathy Love's book "The Corn Snake Manual", it has some great photos of male/female comparisons. (Page 37 in the Breeding section to be exact)

I'll get that book. But kinda late to order it now that I need to sex the snake (or try my best) in a matter of hours.

There really is no good way for an inexperienced herper to sex a hatchling snake by himself. I'm sorry, there's no advice anyone can give you that can help you sex your hatchling safely. Your best bet is to flip a coin, tell the person you think it's an XXX, but can't be sure because you're new at the sexing thing, and that he/she should get someone to verify the gender if he/she really cares that much.

If the buyer only wants to buy it if it's a specific gender, or if the buyer needs to absolutely know the snake's gender with certainty, you and the buyer are outta luck.

Only females produce Musk As well. Chances are if you see yellow liquid and nohting pop out of course, that is a female. Compliments of Love =)

This is a great link from nehpets1 but I would still attempt your first popping/probing with an experienced popper/prober first so that they can tell you if you are doing it right or not ;)

Males musk as well. It has nothing to do with reproduction, but is a form of defense.

Yes, you were told wrong. Just ask anyone who has a male kingsnake or milk snake if they musk!

Known male

I agree, and try it on a known male... Agree about it being a great link that is....

mwhahaha!

Ok well I got my popping lesson today from an experienced snake breeder.
After 45 minutes or so I was able to finally pop a known male. Too bad that means nothing as when I pop again later and nothing comes out I know chances are that I just didn't do it right again!

no problem... practice is good for everything, although, I wouldn't try popping the same snake every time, he might think you are ... shall we say, interested?

and remember that larger corns are better suited to probing. buy a set from someone like serpenco or kathy...

SUPPORT the big guys... they help us small guys evolve

I am a little worried actually because the snakes seems a little stressed today. Was digging its nose into things. I hope I didnt stress it too much.

Is he shedding?
When they are shedding, they rub their noses to break the skin on the nose to be able to shed the old skin ;)
Let us know

im new to the herp world but i was walked through popping by a friend demonstrating on her adolescent snake... anyhoo i tried it and this yellowis liquid or bubble looking thing came out... nothing else... no hemis so i assume female? :shrugs:

Can I just say....... gaaaaaaaaaah!

You're friend was showing you on an adolescent snake? Not a good idea unless you are shopping for prolapses.

Why exactly is it so frantic that you must identify this snake's gender? Are you selling? It would seem much more logical to inform your potential buyer that you aren't sure of gender and that they should get the snake checked out themselves.

replover: If nothing came out it doesn't neccesarily mean you're doing it wrong, it may be a female. And if you don't know for sure and keep trying and applying more pressure, this says to me that you should get more practise with someone experienced at this.

MulatteMadness:STOP. Whatever you are doing, STOP RIGHT NOW. It sounds like you are forcing urates out of your snake. (Imagine someone grabbing your bladder and squeezing!) or your snake has got an infection from being 'popped' e.g. messed with so much. When we say 'someone experienced' that doesn't mean 'someone with a snake'. I have 11 snakes of my own but would never dream of popping them as I have no idea what I'm doing!

ok sorry to freak u guys out!
First off the girl who showed me didnt fully demonstrate on an adolescent... just where to push up towards and the amount of pressure... but she didnt pop the snake right there...
Second the only reason i want to know is because i think it deserves a suitable name... it has a loving home and i want it to have a name... i like giving my animals names with meaning... so i want to find one that suits the personality.. but knowing a gender would make it easier to choose you know?
Third.. the girl just mated her snake not too long ago and successfully popped all of the 15 babies... no harm done.. so i figured she would be ok to talk to about it
and finally thank you for the responses... i didnt really try more than twice for fear of hurting my baby... the other times i was just examining the underside and body for any problems... anyways we have a "new pet" vet check up just to make sure the snake is ok anyways... with no pre-existing problems...
