What do you guys like better? Do you use sand, aspen, bark? I'm just wondering because I'm using aspen right now because that's what the pet store had Bella in so I didn't want to change too much for her at once! I am wondering how sand is? I've never used it before but I just feel like it would help heating wise anyone know?

I'd recommend you don't use sand at all. It's not good for corn snakes.

I started out using aspen because that's what most everybody else used. I actually used Newspaper on my Boas years ago. Aspen was not available back then.

Right now I use a "Reptile Mat." I find it easier and not as messy as Aspen. It's easy to find the poop, easy to clean, and reusable over and over. I don't have to buy aspen anymore, don't have to search through it looking for the poop, don't have to vacuum all around the cage after cleaning it.

Some people will say, "But my snake likes to burrow and it's sooooo cute. If I take the aspen out he can't burrow anymore." Actually, the corn snake burrows because we give him that option. If you don't give him the option he will simply hide somewhere else.
 
Yeah, when I switch to a rack system in a couple years I will probably go to newsprint or sanichip. For now I'm using shredded aspen. I really like the look of reptibark, especially when used in conjunction with aspen for contrast, but I don't use tanks anyway so there's not much point to making a pretty display.
 
I use shredded aspen and also aspen curls. The snakes do seem to enjoy both of them. I will say the aspen curls are a darker color and it's hard to see poop. I have also used Carefresh in the past and it was fine.
 
As stated, you shouldn't use sand.
I use aspen and I like it. Looks quite nice, easily spot cleaned and the snake likes to make tunnels and mess around with it. It's true it is a bit dusty, though.
 
Yah I use aspen now and when I had my red tail boa I used the bark stuff and I do like the aspen better!! The only reason I was thinking sand was because they say in holds the heat from the uth better but I'm glad I asked before I tried it!!

Most Corn snakes look amazing on dark coloured Orchid bark.

So many plus points as well , very few weaknesses .
 
I only change out all the aspen about once a year, but I throw out a big handful every time there is a poop, so it gets turned over fairly fast.

I have used Eco Earth for lay boxes but have never done an entire viv in it. It's dark brown and looks nice. I'm not even sure if it's recommended for a whole viv for corns. Just thought I'd mention it because you're looking for dark.
