Can you guys tell me what you think about moving my hatchling from a 10 gal to a 29 high gal? This is my first corn. I've had him since 8-6-05. He has fed once and I will be feeding again tonight. I know to add lots of hides, and I wouldn't be moving him until roughly Sept.5th. I think the added height and room would be good for him. Am I being a noob here and thinking the complete wrong opinion?! Let me know, thanks!

I'd personally wait until the hatchling is 8-10 month old before moving up to an enclosure of that size. Too much open space can cause the little ones to have a negative reaction (ie go off food). Also, floor space it desired more so than height. Unless you already have the 29 tall, see if a 20-30 gallon long is available instead.

Well, I do already have the 29 gal...used to be for my white's treefrogs, but they just got "upgraded". But no hurry, I'll just throw the tank up in the attic! Thanks for the post. What size viv do you keep your adults in? I've been told that 20 gal is the min.

My collection is housed in valmorphanized plastic containers.

Make sure you completely sanitize that tank since it was used for amphibians....

Hey this is just a thought but if you try to add a "floor" to increase floor space that might help. you have the height. You could use Plexiglas for the new floor.
Something to think about while it up in the attic.

i have a 29 gallon high for my little hatchling and he is doing just fine with eating regulary and the high is great fo scenery and sticks for him to climb on

Sounds like a plan...Anyone have any words of caution or advice before I start the addition?

Make sure it is sturdy. It may not look like it now, being so young, but corns are strong. They will move things around, especially when they shed. You will also want to keep in mind that you will need to get under that top level at some stage.

Only one of my (many) hatchlings liked to climb, now she is a yearling and rarely climbs 3 inches from the substrate, just something to think about when planning. However most of my larger corns will stretch upwards quite regularly. If you do add a second level, make triple sure the top is secure, the closer they can get to it the more leverage they have to pry it open.

As for what to make the level out of, there are two main thoughts IMO. Something that looks "natural", and something that is easy to keep clean and sterile. These two rarely work together I find. Laminate boards or Plexiglas are easy to keep clean, but look like cr#p,rough cork sheets look good IMO but can harbour bacteria, you just know Murphy will make the snake HAVE to poop there. :shrugs:

Having said all that, I do like the idea of a second level for that size viv.

yea, I'm thinking maybe Plexiglas shelf that is only half the length of the tank, then maybe with a minor lip on the exposed edge of the shelf to hold in the substrate. Then decorate with plants accordingly.
I have a good lid that is a plastic slotted/meshed with four points that lock it onto the lid (the same grooves that an aquarium lid rests on). I think this will be enough even with the added leverage given by the extra height.
How long do you think a corn could stay in a 29gal high with an added shelf, would it be large enough for an adult corn, or only until it is 1 year old? (this is my first corn).
Also, does anyone know of a good place to get aspen substrate?

i would suggest using the same type of substrate you used in the smaller tank to allow familiarity. and of course a few extra hides. i moved my adult corn from a 20 gallon to a 40 gallon, and she did nothing but hide for almost 2 months, refused all meals, didnt drink water and wouldnt come out from under the substrate. it took some getting used to but i think she loves the tank now. i can tell she is happy that she can stretch out, not like the last tank where she couldnt stretch across the tank without bending.
to help her drink water while she was shy of her tank, i put a couple capfuls of water (just from a 2L bottle) where she was hiding, and found she would drink the water. so she must have been intimidated to come out and drink. you could try that if you have any troubles. in all, the snake should eventually get used to its new home, and thank you for the extra space.

Yes, I will use the same substrate...I'm just trying to figure out how to switch over to aspen, if it is cheaper than the Jungle floor stuff i'm using now.
Is this typical for the snake to become so spooked from a cage change? Even if the old hides are in the "same" location? If so, it would appear that the fewest number of changes would be best...maybe I should invest in an adult sized tank, so when Maiz outgrows the 10gal, I can change him only that one time...

Would changing from a 10 gal to say a 50gal high be a good idea? (not sure on the big demensions...since I have yet to buy the tank) The reason i'm talking of getting a tall tank, is I would like Maiz to have the choice of climbing higher if he wants.

An easier way to use some of that vertical space is to add some diagonal climbing branches. Find some that are a bit bent and forked if you can, and set them up so there is a horizontal crotch near the top (see the pics below). My snakes will spend their evening hours curled up high and watching the doings in the living room.

Unless it gets unusually large it should be good for life in a 29 gallon. The recommended minimum for one adult corn is a 20L, which I personally think is a bit small.

You should be able to find Aspen at most pet shops. The trick is to look in the "Small Animal" section. Most chain type stores don't keep it with the reptile supplies.

Thanks Scotty! Didn't think about the branch idea! Funny how the easy things escape us when we try to think! Well, Maiz was out moving tonight (fed yesterday night) so I will prob. change to aspen Saturday or Sunday. Thanks all!

Hatchling Age?

Can anyone take a gander as to what age my hatchling is? I bought at a pet store, so I'm not sure on age. He is currently anywhere from 14-16 inches long(hard to measure). I have some pictures as well, if that will help.

The reason I ask is that I unfortunately have to head back to college here in 5 weeks or so, and would like to move him to the 29 (without shelves, just lots of hides and sticks) so that he has more to explore until I get home on the weekends to feed him and play. I currently don't have a stick in his cage b/c the lid is fine, but i worry that the extra height may be enough for him to climb up and find a way out. Thanks.

i have 9 "babies" that i have been collecting from different sources they are living in a 60 gallon tank for now i do evenually plan on housing them in a large tropical green house i know most breeders keep their snakes seperated but is it absoloutley necessary my snakes really enjoy each other what do you think?
