Water is empty in the morning!

last night was my baby's first night with me...This morning when I checked on him, his water bowl was completely empty, I mean dry as a bone. Is this normal? I'm guessing he didn't drink it, that it evaporated. Should it evaporate that quickly? Overnight? Needless to say, I refilled it this morning and now it looks like the level of water might have gone down a hair, but I really can't tell, I spilled a drop when I was putting it back in.

hmmm,
Daniel

Are you using an UTH or light for heat? Is the water on the warm side? It also could be that in the winter it is dryer and it will evaporate quicker.

I'm using a light for heat, but the bowl is mostly on the cool side. I'd say its about 25% of the way on the cool side of the tank. It is cold right now outside. It may be that the heater in the house is drying out the air??

1) How big is the container? Wide and flat evaporates faster than deeper containers.

2) Heat lamps rapidly remove moisture for the enclosure.

I'm sorry I wasn't very clear in my last post........

How big is the water container. ;)

that is a very shallow water dish. That is why you are having problems with it evaporating. Either move all the way to the cool side, or get a deeper dish.

that happens to me...

sometimes as well. i have a small ceramic bowl for my hatchling because he was having a difficult time finding his water source. now he has no problem locating it, but it dries up very quickly. i just make sure i refill it everyday and keep it on the cool side next to his hide.

The time of year really doesn't help, either. Even with my deeper dishes, I have water bowl levels going down at amazing speeds due to the lovely winter weather dryness and heaters being on.

I agree with everyone, too. That is a very shallow dish. You'll probably have to fill it every day or use a deeper on with more capacity.

Dude I told you THREE TIMES. You need a water bowl large enough that the snake can emmerse it's entire body it without overflowing. (Also wash it daily - or every second day - and provide fresh water)

However, it shouldn't just evaporate like that overnight so I'm curious... are your temps right? Do you have the light overtop of it?

I just thoguht it might be nice to note here that some ceramics absorb water. I had a small ceramic bowl that I used as a water cup, but the water kept disappearing rather fast. So I tested with just a few drops on the surface of it and within a couple of minutes it had sunk into the material.

Then again, it was probably meant for having plants in...

I switched to another container, made out of some kind of resin I think, and haven't had problems since. :)
