Water

Bartholomew

Big Brotha Bart
My snake is currently in his shedding process. I havent been misting the tank lately, so today, I decided to give him a little bath. The awesomest thing happen. First he started drinking the little water droplets from his skin. Then I cupped my hand and made a tiny pool. He found his way to it and started drinking out of my hands!!!! It was just amazing! ( I still freak out when I catch my snake drinking water from the bowl, now He was drinking out of my hand! It was hard to stay calm! :crazy01:) So, I felt like dad with Bart drinking out of my hand. And after he stoped.
It struck me.
He's never drank tap water before. Only filtered refrigerator water. I'm not worried, only concerned. Tap water isnt bad for the snake is it? What kind of water you all give to your corns?
Thanks in advance :D I'm still shocked that he did that.

I used to give my snakes tap water, but after reading Don Soderberg's book, I only give them bottled drinking water. He strongly cautions against giving hatchlings tap water because the additives in it can be toxic to snakes. I recall that Kathy Love also recommends bottled water. The younger and smaller the snake is, the less able it is to rid itself of them and they can accumulate in the body. He also recommends bottled drinking water for adults as well. I believe the main issue is with the fluoride that won't evaporate out, like chlorine will.

I know many people give their snakes tap water and probably never have any issues (at least that they can attribute to the water). But sometimes unexplained things happen such as sudden deaths, going off food, etc., that we don't have explanations for. Don't know if the water source could contribute to it, but since bottled water is cheaper, I think it's better to be safe than sorry.

Oh, and never give distilled water to snakes - they need the minerals that are present in drinking water.

I give my snakes water out of the tap, but I am on a well, so I do not think that we have any of the chlorine or fluoride that city taps have... I could be wrong though...
Usually when our lines sit unused for a weekend or so, when we first turn the water on I smell sulfur, but it goes away after a minute or so, does anyone know if that would be dangerous for the snakes? They seem to drink it without problems, I just need to know if I should switch them to bottled water. I do not want to loose a snake because the water is bad.

Thanks for the input! I'll start giving them bottled water.

Like Kronos said. "Its better to be safe than sorry." ;)

I have a well, ( no city water for me thank God) and it is actually very clean good tasting water. I use tap water but as was said before I dont have the additives that city water has.

Our water tastes fine, and in fact is not as hard as the water where we used to live. I am just a little worried that our sulfur content in the water will cause problems.
