anyone have these? i saw the new babies at a show the other day and i'm completely obsessed with them now. i think they are so cool and they don't get big at all which is think is cool. i also think its cool that they aren't really all that common. i'm kinda kicking myself right now cause they were only 50 for males, 60 for female at that show...and now everyone online i'm seeing them advertised as like 75-100 PLUS shipping! if theres still a whole gang of them at the next show im picking some up in a heartbeat!!

i dont have any but yes they are very cool snakes.. keep in mind they are slightly venomous (rear Fanged) and Not that it will happen but you could have an alergic reaction to the venom (since theres not usualy enough to kill a human) and you could be hospitalized? this is also if your dumb enough to let it chew on you to sink its fangs in :grin01: which i doubt you are..
and if you get one good luck and have fun with your new pet :)

What kind of care do those need they are very nice lookin, is it basically the same as corns. How big of an enclosure will they need full grown?

We already had a trio (not sure the age of the male, the females are both 2005) and we picked up another 3.4 to get started this past weekend at the show. They're tiny little things but adorable! I really love them but you can't let yourself be intimidated if they like to hiss (like our one big male - he hisses at anything that moves including the snake in the rack next to him). Out of all of the snakes, those have never bitten us (struck with closed mouth but not bitten). They really are cute - I'll have to take some pics of the new babies when I have a chance. Just make sure any you get are feeding well on pinks.

do you guys recommend any of the phases there are out there? the ones i saw i guess were just normals..they were kinda brown and gray. but theres also something called a dusky phase? and they have green phase and red phase too. are any of these things genetic or is it just selective breeding? p.s. i'm curious to know how you guys house these. i'd imagine these would fair better than corns if you kept the babies in a group (i know...never recommended but doesn't hurt to ask) just cause they are so darned tiny. i think putting one baby in a 10 gallon would kind of be overkill. i was also contemplating the idea of just keeping them in their own sterilite bin with a lid and uth vs. the aquarium just cause it's smaller and easier to maintain. i have a rack for those bins but it would just be too warm for them..so maybe i could just sit it on top? any thoughts?

oh...and i played with probably 3-4 babies on the table and none of them did any hissing or any of that business...just friendly as can be. god they were cute...they are like 6 inches long and are just like big catepillars (except i think catepillars are disgusting). are there any known breeders for this snake?

Hognose!!!

We have two, an olive phase female and a red male. They are the cutest things EVER! They have so much personality and are interested in everything you do.

They both are picky eaters and the male, Gimlet, generally refuses f/t. It's very frustrating... but otherwise they're awesome. Here is Gimlet...

I've been looking into these guys as well. Sooo cute. But all I currently have room for at the moment is a 10 gallon...and there seems to be some debate as to whether that is to small or not for a male. Oh well.

Been away for a while and just saw this. We have an 04 female that is adorable. She's named Kiki after a Swedish girl my husband once knew; thought the hogs upturned nose reminded him if her!

We just put ours in a 20 gallon but there are people that would keep them in a 10 gallon. Ours has grown tremendously in the last year and is about 18 - 20 in. long. She didn't eat much over the winter and is now back to eating every one to 2 weeks. She seems to favor smaller size prey. I have found it hard to find good info on caring for them. In general they probably like it same temp or maybe a little hotter than the corns. They love to burrow and they are infrequent shedders. They can be finicky eaters which is why someone posted that you should make sure that they are eating FT pinks when you buy.

I just adopted one of these little guys. To be honest he freaked me out at first because he hissed at me when i tried to pick him up. Then realized he just has short man symdrome (no offense meant to any short men reading) and just had to ask like he was tough! He's all bluff. Once you pick him up he's cool. He's on 05 hatchling and right now he's about 8 inches long. I know he was eating f/t pinkies when I got him but I haven't been able to get him to eat in the past 2 weeks. He just shed yesterday (all in one piece...good little guy!) so hopefully his appetite will be back tomorrow when we try to feed him.

He's quickly growing on me, just because he's got such a funny personality!

Yeah, I read these guys are toad eaters in the wild and that could be pretty hard to feed after awhile.

Mostly it's the Eastern Hognose that are the toad eaters, but the Western's are a bit finicky too.

Thanks for the care sheets posted in the other thread. I may have read those already but it was reassuring to see that the adults only eat fuzzies or hoppers every 7 - 10 days! I think being a Jewish mother I was just trying to stuff her face!

She goes through phases of being relaxed or flattening her head and hissing. I love it when she does it - she looks so funny - very hard to take seriously!

From what I've read, people really like their western hognoses. They are really cute. I would get one, but I'm allergic to just about everything, so I'm just gonna be cautious and control my urge to buy one. From what I've heard, they probably wont use their rear fangs on you. There was an incident where someone was bit, and showed pics of his hand swellling up and all, but I think he had antagonized it to do that. He also showed pics of him letting the hognose chew on him for a while to inject enough venom. What an idiot.

Yeah, I think that the guy got bit and let it chew on purpose to see the severity of the venom. For a normal person, the envenomation isn't that bad (like a bad bee sting) but if you are allergic to many things (like bee stings) there is a decent chance that you could be allergic to the venom. However, it seems that my hoggies are very reluctant to even strike, and when they do strike, it is with a closed mouth. And if they do end up biting, they would have to work pretty hard at getting their rear fangs sunk into the skin (small mouths) and it takes quite a bit of chewing to envenomate. If you watch them eat live prey you will notice that.

Western Hognose

Hi All!

Ours areall bark and no bite. I have yet to meet someone who owns them that reports aggressive behavior.

Kim, I've got allergies too...ugh. But, I'm no more allergic to these guys than I am to my corns, rats and kings. So.... buy away! lol

Here is my little Gimlet giving it to a mouse though :D

After looking at this thread, attached links, and researching online, I think I must get a hognose!!!! I am so taken with the lil guys!! From reading about them and from the posts, they sound like interesting pets. I haven't read any cons about them (besides the rear fang, weak venom, I don't think that is a problem) Just beautiful animals!
