What are those funny numbers?

I just started here today, and I've noticed many people have a number with a decimal point or two followed by another number and the name of a kind of animal. What o's this? I presume it's to let everyone know what kind of animals you keep, but what are the numbers for?

And it's not much used with snakes but gecko keepers often use a fourth number to refer to the viable eggs they have on the ground. So 1.2.3.4 would be 1 male, 2 female, 3 unknown and 4 eggs.

Ahh, I see. Thanks for the more in depth understanding.
