What do u clean your tank with?

Lucy's tank stinks a little bit. Next feed I was gonna use some mild dish soap and water to clean it out. Is that a bad idea? What do y'all use to clean tanks?

Hi Barb...

I use a bleach solution... very diluted. It eliminates smell, kills bacteria and it's cheap. I usually do it then rinse the container along with a complete aspen change every month. Seems to do the trick.

I am inclined to use warm water and vinegar. I personally don't feel comfortable using bleach as I would worry about leaving some behind.

I use an odourless and harmless anti-bacterial cleaner, and then rinse the entire viv out to remove any excess. I do a full aspen change every month.

I use Nolvasan. It is a 2% Chlorhexidine antimicrobial concentrate. It is VERY safe and doesn't even have to be rinsed. It actually keeps killing germs for a couple of days. It is GREAT for cleaning wounds and can even be used in the mouth (when diluted, of course). A gallon of the generic stuff is around $18. The name brand is around $35 a gallon. You only mix 1-2 ounces to a gallon of water, however, so it's actually quite inexpensive.

I too use Nolvasan, and swear by it. I used to use the Zoo Med "Wipe Out 1" spray, but the rinsing was a time waster. As Terri said, Nolvasan can be used without rinsing, is cheap given the dilution ratio, and is even used in topical applications.

I rarely do the testimonial thingy, but with this product, it's a no-brainer.

regards,
jazz

You can put Nolvasan on any search engine or type in Chlorhexidrine which is the chemical. You can usually find 1 gal. bottles for around $13 I really like the stuff.

WOW...it's gone down since I last purchased it if it can be found for $13. That's great news! Also, it is spelled Chlorhexidine (diacetate). I wouldn't want anyone to search with it misspelled...they might get a bit frustrated.;) There is a Chlorhexidrine gluconate, too. I am not sure how it is different or if it even does the same thing.

How would you go about using the warm water and vinegar? Would you have to rinse the tank out or just use a sponge with warm water and vinegar?

I've been using Windex Multi-Task with Vinegar for my cages, and it's great.

It's ammonia free, so no worries about it melting tubs or PVC molded cages. It leaves a slight hint of freshness, nothing overpowering like bleach tended to.

And I've found it loosens "cling-on's" a lot better than soapy water or bleach water.

Lately I have been using Nolvasan solution. In the past I have used diluted ammonia and had no problems with that either. Both help break poo down and leave the bins smelling clean. I don't know if anyone else does this but I have also found that nothing scrubs those stubborn dried poos off better than..... urates. I will usually pick up as much of the poo as possible, but purposely leave some urates behind to help "scrub". Once it comes clean I wipe it down with cleaner one more time. :shrugs:

I suppose you could. Here's a nice epinions article about the stuff. Maybe this will help you make your decision. Based on what I've read, it seems to be bleach and water; the same stuff you can make GALLONS of on your own for just a couple of bucks. Anyhow, hope this little review helps you out.
