Sticking To The Ceiling
So the mice I've been getting from the petstore I got my corn tend to have legs or tails broken but still connected. However, one of the pinkies I got from them even had its neck ripped open.


So I'm wondering, should good quality feeders look like they're just asleep and not like they've died from a freak-battle?
 
Most of the damage you're seeing probably happened post freezing and does have to do with the nutritional quality of the meals. When you graduate to larger mice, you'll find this no longer happens. Pinkies are just very fragile when frozen.
 
I didn't think so. I'm still curious though, because the fuzziness have more "injuries" than the pinks. Maybe I should ask to look at their bigger sizes and their rats?


Also, I have a shipment of 50 fuzzies and 50 hoppers coming in Friday, so I wanna know if I should continue to order from them.

They look pretty good, especially the small ones that look like large pinkies or peach fuzzies, but the minimum order of 100 USD pushes me away from ARS.
 
But the $100 will last for such a long time it is well well worth it. I swear by ARS now!
 
Breakage is normal, your corns won't care... in fact it probably intensifies the scent of food.

I bought pinks from a private breeder when I was first starting out... let me tell ya, I'll never go back to that. The pinkys I bought from Big Cheese and even the local reptile store were so clean and fat they looked like someone had scrubbed them clean before they died, and seem so much healthier. They're piglet pink instead of a dusty greyish pink and free from poop bits and their whiskers are even still firmish after thawing!
 
I'm a big fan of Mice Direct. I know that I could probably find them locally from a breeder, but I have been pleased with both the price and quality. Breakage is more than normal, it should almost be expected imo. I worked for the two biggest parcel companies and I know how I treated packages. The battle those little guys went through is called shipping.

I'm 15, get 10 bucks of allowance a week, and have one corn. It's way too much.

I know that, but the one pinkie I had with the tear in its neck freaked me out... and I certainly don't wanna buy a mouse that has it's head hanging off it's body.

That's great. I ordered from the Big Cheese Rodent Factory, and the fuzzies I have from a local place are a sickly gray... and not very fat.

I am a grown up married, with two kids, but since we only have 1 snake ordering 100 bucks in mice at a time is WAY to much even for me so I wouldn't worry about that.

I got 100 pinks from mice direct at Repticon for 20 bucks and since they were selling at the show I didn't have to pay for shipping. If I were you I would use what you ordered and then in the future see if any reptile shows come to your area and go to them. That way you can get the bulk pricing without having to pay for shipping, plus you can look at the bag you are buying and see if they are in decent shape or not. What I did was brought a little cooler with some ice packs and then I just made sure that I purchased the mice right before I left so that they didn't thaw on the way home.

A private breeder of mice is not as bad as some have made it out to be. Ask to see where the mice are raised and housed. If they wont let you. Then dont deal with them. I consider myself a private mouse breeder and I take pride in knowing any mouse that leaves here (frozen or alive) is in the best condition and kept in the best condition. Going to a show is another way of finding good feeder prices. Also if you have a reptile club in the area, go to a meeting. People often bulk order for multiple collections and share shipping and/or someone raises there own mice that would be willing to sell you a few. And there is always the raising of your own colony of mice, but that is another story and can be as addicting as your corn snake.

I am 16 and have 26 snakes :) I just only spend cash on snakes!

I've looked around for some expos nearby, but I haven't found any in Nevada. Probably once I've got my license (in about a year's time) I'll go to expos in neighboring states, but it's too soon to tell.

5 fuzzies from a local shop cost me 10 USD..

I've thought very hard about breeding my own mice. I think I will be doing that with one male and two females maybe once my corn is eating adults.

Actually pending on where your from thats not bad. So it cost you 10 bucks for roughly a months worth of food.

I charge $1 each to people that only get a couple of mice(any size). 50 cents a pop for more bulkier buyers. And then I have the month fee for regular buyers/ collectors. The month fee is a little different but so far it has worked well for me and the 2 people that are on it.

If your going to raise mice be sure you can stomach putting the mice down. If you do start a mouse colony, I would start it now and not wait until the snake is older. You would be able to pick and freeze the perfect size pinkie, fuzzy for snake. I am not saying it is cheaper to do so when you only have 1 snake. but it can be rewarding.....

Well I do a few things here and there for family and my dads print shop. I do several things. And my family does like snakes. Don't mind pepper, we all know shes a hater! LOL j/k!
 
Okay, my 50 fuzzies and 50 hoppers came today about 2 hours ago. They're vacuum sealed nicely and I can't see ANY broken legs or tails. There's a few blood spots on each bag, but that's it.

Not gonna be buying broken mice, again.
 
Man, I gotta say, for all the complaints I have about my local exotic pet store . . . they do have some nice lookin' mice.

Before I moved here I used to have to buy from Petsmart, and let me assure you, they were MUCH lower quality.

You can just TELL - the skin is some sort of extreme of pink, not a healthy, rosy pink. Often there was feces stuck to them or in the bag. Once defrosted they seemed sort of shriveled and malnourished; I could tell that their nutritional value was just not that high.
