What is this?

Usually sphagnum moss is what you want. It is looser in density and easily lets water be sqeezed out of it. You just soak it in the water for a minute or so and then wring out the excess. I'd check it every few days to make sure it's still moist and not developing any mold.

Oh i see!
I dont have that sphagnum type!

I was going to do it tonight
I might have to do it with paper towels.. if not ill make sure to get that type... and i was doing research about it and it seems i cant find it in most pet store.. i have to get it from a garden center?

I get bags of untreated moss from a local florist's for my pacman toad. Just have to rinse it through because it's a bit dusty, but it's about 5 times cheaper than the petshop and it's the same moss.

i heard pet stores have ready moist hides
!! any ideas?

Make him a hide with anything- (do you guys think you could take a sponge and tear it into 1" pieces and use that???) and if you need me to I can mail you some sphagnum moss if you want. But it would take a couple days to get there, and I couldn't mail it till tomorrow.

I don't recall anyone saying you can make a moist hide with anything. There are certain things that are best to use...sphagnum moss is one of those things.

Just be aware of Sporotrichosis when handling it.

Maybe it would have been better to say that as "Make him a moist hide with any of the _approved_ things." Like paper towels till she can get the right moss. But in case of emergency, couldn't you use anything non-toxic/inert/porous- like I don't know what- which is where sponge came to mind. If you didn't have moss available.

I tried to use Fluker's "All Natural" moss once, since the store didn't have sphagnum moss. It _looked_ all right, but when I went to rinse it, green dye came off it and wouldn't rinse out. So what if the dye is "all natural," if it turns your snake green.

I didn't use it, and went with paper towels, which I know some people use successfully- but both the snakes I tried it on wouldn't stay in the hide. One went on to successfully use a moss hide on the next shed- the other still didn't like the moist hide at all.

Hi Nanci
I understand what youre saying
I do have moss. its called green moss and it looks dusty and it smells
Thats why i was asking.
Im going to use paper towels and see if it will work.. he was never fond of that type of things but he might like this *if he was smart enough to know that it is good for his shed*

and just for the record i checked when his last shed was.....Sep 30 2006

There are your snake's nostrils. They are a bit obscured by the loosening skin, but they are there.

Hey Becky!
thanks haha i didnt think youd POINT it out

I knew those were the nostils as i saw in other pics.. specially newly posted ones wherei can clearly see the hole of the nostrils... while i couldnt tell stewie's

So it is what i thought.. the skin is covering it more everyday
I am going to build his hide tonight after dinner and all the cr@p i need to do.

thank you again!
YOure always one of the best here

Im just updating you guys (for those who are interested, i know it gets annoying after a while)
but he did not use his moist hide AT ALL yet....
He is one stubborn snake....... he prefers to go under the aspen instead

None of my corns will use theirs either. I just mist their tanks.

OK, your misting and have the top covered with something but what are your humidity levels up too. And If he uses his regular hide just lift it up and place some damp moss there (making it like a nest ) and place the hide back. But you need to remove the moss and any damp bedding after his is done shedding. BTW. You got a nice lookin' snake there.

HI Lenny
Nice to see you again!

Yes i know what you mean. but i never got moss so i used paper towels for the hide.
I remember i have done it once where i put paper towels on the walls of his hide since he is using it from time to time.. but he is mostly under the aspen....

the humidity levels go up. sometimes they go way up.. right now it is 65 in there and yes i do have the top covered but not completely.. 3/4 is covered..

I keep checking his skin, it is still as shy as if he just shed.. no dull coloring yet ,except his head

and by the way... you are not just an old guy..
I was just referring to putting a face to you since youve always been here answering my questions..

and thanks again.... I thought you had met stewie before.. :)

I have had a male that looked pretty ratty by the time he went thru breeding season. Almost like yours. He eventually shed and came out looking good again. I wouldn't worry too much. I'd just spray a time or two and not worry about it. Too much humidity is worse than none. He'll shed when he's ready.

:D:D:D i know that NOW..
after all of you guys here teling
I said to myself.. why do i worry so much about this little guy.. he knows what he wants he knows when he wants it.. then be it

thanks again Meg!

Just to let you guys know
I woke up today and he is sleeping in his moist hide

I hope that will work
but i do need to ask a silly question

he is due to eat tonight... should i not do it?
and if yes..... should i remove him from in there? wouldnt that disturb him?

i was going to get his new tank and al lthat but i thought it might not be the best time to change him since he does need time to adjust to his new tank.. i thought its not right since he is in the process of shedding...

With the "problem" of the skin over the nostrils and going throught a shed cycle, I would wait to feed and upgrading his tank until he done.
