What kind of hides?

Homicidal Nymph

Well, I'm getting my snake August 5th (just ordered it from cornsnake.net, so excited!) and now I'm planning for my vivarium. I've got pretty much everything planned for, branches, substrate, thermometers, heaters, etc, I just need to know about hides. I've never had a corn snake before, so I don't know what kind of hides they'd like. Would a small cardboard box that he could curl up in work?

Welcome
Yes, They also like the cardboard tube from from paper towels. But any type of hide will do, not so big thought. Mine likes to be confined a little.
Good luck :)

I have a "wild" 32" corn. Maizey, in a 20 gallon viv. I gave her one of those hollow stone things, which she turned her nose up at, so I put in a half hollow log, which she went into immediately. But a day later, the hollow stone became her favorite hide. She also has some big (8") loquat leaves laying around. She has somehow arranged the leaves so there are a couple outside each hide. She then alternates between the two hides, sitting with her head out, resting on a leaf like it's a pillow.

I found Maizey under a pile of brush in my yard about three weeks ago. She was curled up so small I thought she was a baby. When I picked her up, she was immediately comfortable with being handled. When I got a chance to measure her, I was shocked to see she was 32" long! She ate her first F/T like she'd been eating them her entire life. She loves to cuddle. She's not like a wild snake at all...

Wow! You are so lucky to find a corn in your own backyard. I think I'd die of joy and shock if I found one like that. It almost sounds like she is someone's escaped pet corn. Almost too good to be true. You should really post some pictures of her.

(Sorry- not trying to hijack the thread!) I live in the middle of nowhere- Maizey would have had to travel a long way if she's an escapee. I have an anole family living around my back steps (and recently a new frog)- it's nice to know they are safe now! :) I also have a wild Glass Lizard, but he HATES being handled, and I respect that. Plus, I don't want him to fall apart! He's so cool to watch tunneling around and stalking his crickets. His name is Russell, as in "what do you call a guy with no arms and no legs that likes to roll in leaves?"

I have regular hides you buy, some old plastic xmas tree shaped plastic jello molds that I cut a "doorway" into, and a Kleenex tissue box with a door cut out. Also an overturned small cardboard box that they love too. The cheaper the better seems to be the rule.

I use some heavy-weight cat bowls that are hollow underneath for my coolside hides. The juveniles love them. I use a dog-size version of the same thing for my adults, and it's a big favorite for them, too. It's just enough space underneath to squish into...I think it's the whole snakes being related to cats thing...squishing into the most impossibly small space they can find.

I just bought a new hide for Maizey yesterday afternoon. I took out the half hollow log (of real wood) and put in one of those pet store fakey hollow logs with the little mushrooms and leaves on it. It is open at both ends, and has an additional hole in the center. I wasn't sure if she was going to like it. She headed for her hollow rock when the remodeling began, and wasn't seen again. I also got a suction cup vine for the back wall. Then I put a lamp with just a 60w bulb over the viv, to light it a little bit. I can't believe how hot it gets! After all the commotion was over, she came out to explore, and ended up with her tail half in the new hide, her body under loquat leaves along the back wall, and her head resting on a leaf as usual (see avatar). Now she alternates back and forth between the two hides. The hollow log is over the UTH. I think her favorite is still the hollow rock, because it is smaller.

tupperware

I use old Tupperware dishes with a 7/8in. hole drilled in the center. Then place the bowl upside down in the Viv. you can always find small bowls at yard sales, flea markets, dollar stores etc. I also use newspaper folded to the appropriate sizeand simply lay it on top of the substrate, this also gives you an area to feed when using aspen shavings, Good luck& happy herpin!! Believe It Or Not But I Have An Old Tennis Shoe In His Cage And Also One On My Desk. He Loves The Shoes. When I M Working

I use these plastic flower pot saucers. They are cheap and come in 2 colorrs and 4 sizes. the 2 smaller sizes are shown, but the largest size fits my 4' female perfectly and she loves it. I usually pick a few up when I go grocery shopping.

Wow, thats sounds cool! I'd love to see some pics of that. :)

Well, today my boyfriend and I got the stuff for his tank. He got two hides, a half-log wooden hide, the typical pet-store type, and a shallower granite rock type of hide. They both have pretty much the same amount of room, which is perfect for a youngster (which he'll be getting). We put the granite on the cold side so that it wouldn't heat up.

I forgot to mention my hides earlier, I use 3 hides. One is from the petstore, its like a big log with fake plants on top of it. She likes to climb on the plants and they are sturdy enough to hold her right now, and its also large enough so that I can place half the hide on the UTH and half the hide off of it. Sometimes I find her right in the middle with half her body on the UTH and the other half off of it. Its sort of funny, like she can't make up her mind :crazy02: The other two hides are wicker baskets I got from Wal-mart. They were supposed to be decorational birdhouses, but she likes them well enough. They are just large enough for her to squeeze into. They were only $4 too. The other hide on the other hand was more like $13, but well worth it because it is quite large and durable and will most likely outlast the birdhouses which are starting to unravel now after only being in there for around 2 or so months. When you use aspen though, it too can be its own hide.
